If you have been following the news story about the Kluth family from Yukon, Oklahoma, you will probably be glad to hear that Tuesday the two parents were officially charged with child abuse and taken into custody. In case you haven’t heard the story yet, here are some of the gruesome facts.
Sonja and John Kluth are accused of mistreating their two adopted sons and their one adopted daughter. Reportedly, the parents are accused of repeatedly strangling, beating, assaulting and burning these kids. They have also been charged with neglect for locking the children in an underground storm shelter, feeding them only cat or dog food and even locking their 15-year-old adopted son in a small dog crate.
The children stated that Sonja would often bang their heads against walls, doors and bathroom countertops. One of the boys also showed his disfigured fingers to the police and said that they were injured when one finger was smashed with a can opener and the other was hit with a mallet.
Perhaps one of the things that is most disturbing is that the mother shows no remorse whatsoever, although the father does show some regret. In fact, the mother insists that the things she did were simply to gain control over the children.
It is also very sad that it looks like this abuse had been going on for 5 years or so, even though the adoptive parents were receiving $1,500 a month from social services to care for the children. Why did no one notice anything before? Didn’t the social workers ever check on the children? If they had, surely they would have noticed the signs of abuse and malnourishment! After all, the 15-year-old is said to have the physical body of a 10-year-old due to lack of nutrition.
All I have to say is that I hope these two criminals don’t get away with simply a slap on the wrist for their horrible crimes. After all, what kind of hell have those kids had to endure the past 5 years?
