The sun had yet to rise on the morning of July 16. The year was 1945, and just about twenty or so miles southeast of San Antonio in New Mexico, the first atomic bomb ever, had been detonated. Later on in August, the US army scoured the desert for pieces of a UFO found near ground zero in New Mexico.
That same August, the United States would put a stop to WWII with the harsh-to say the last-explosions of the Japanese’ cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the 6 th , they had announced what had really gone on in New Mexico, back in July. Originally, the San Antonio residents had been lied to by the government, who had announced that the first bomb at the Trinity Site was just “an ammunition magazine containing high explosives and pyrotechnics.”
Along with New Mexico, the rest of the country, in fact, the rest of the world had finally been told the truth about the horrific atomic bomb, which was dubbed “death, the destroyer of worlds,” by J. Robert Oppenheimer, a project physicist.
Later, even more bizarre incidents took place that have to do with the US government. These events would be seen not only by eyewitnesses of individuals who were in the army, but by two young Hispanic children, Reme Baca and Jose Padilla.
At the time, Jose had been nine years old, and Reme only seven. The two children had lived in San Antonio, and had come across remnants of what appeared to be a spacecraft. Pieces were strewn about the place, and they even claim to have seen creatures. Just moments before they had even come upon the sight, what had drawn them there in the first place, were their own eyewitness accounts of a UFO flying, and then crashing into the desert, not unlike the famous Roswell incident.
Apparently, the two children had watched it happened, and pulled some pieces off from the craft. Later, when US officials had come by, Reme and Jose hid and watched as soldiers began to collect pieces of the broken object. They stored them into a large truck that eventually drove off into the desert.
There aren’t too many details of the case itself yet, but a book from Reme and Jose is set to come out in February 2011, titled, Born the Edge of Ground Zero, Living in the Shadow of Area 51. In this book, they will explain what they had seen as children, including the crash, as well as what some pretty odd looking creatures appeared like to them. There are also photos of pieces that the pair of kids had scavenged for around the sight, and today, are still in possession of.
Because the book itself isn’t destined to come out till next year, I wasn’t actually going to write an article on this strange event. Although, after scanning the information about Reme and Jose today, it caught my attention that the journalist and researcher who wrote the book, had to travel to my hometown, Gig Harbor in Washington state, to speak with a fully grown Reme. On top of that, it is worth noting that both of these people (Reme and Jose) are respectable and believable in their accounts. After all, it wouldn’t be the first that the government had lied about something (the very first bomb itself hadn’t even been revealed to New Mexico when they had tested it in that desert, until a month later). Also, Reme and Jose, both in their 70s now, still stand by their testimonies. Even some of the metal pieces that they had collected from the sight, had been shipped off to Europe for further analysis.
Reme is believable as well, in the fact that he has served in the Marines for six whole years, back in the Vietnam War, and has even taken a place in Washington State politics. Back in 2005, still standing by his own account he had told his story during the third annual UFO Crash/Retrieval Conference.
Originally, the case had been documented by journalist Ben Moffet, and has now been put together and by Paola Harris who had interviewed Reme face-to-face in Gig Harbor, and Jose, now a resident of California, over the phone. Even though Harris helped put the case together and interview the men, it was Moffet who had described the incident: “It was in this crucible of suspicion and disinterest bred by familiarity that a small contingent of the U.S. Army passed almost unnoticed through San Antonio in mid-to-late August, 1945 on a secret assignment. Little or nothing has been printed about the mission, shrouded in the “hush-hush” atmosphere of the time. But the military detail apparently came from White Sands Proving Grounds to the east where the bomb was exploded. It was a recovery operation destined for the mesquite and greasewood desert west of Old US-85, at what is now Milepost 139, the San Antonio exit of Interstate 25.Over the course of several days, soldiers in Army fatigues loaded the shattered remains of a flying apparatus onto a huge flatbed truck and hauled it away. That such an operation took place between about Aug. 20 and Aug. 25, 1945 , there is no doubt, insist two former San Antonioans, Remigio Baca and Jose Padilla, eyewitnesses to the event.”
It is not know for sure, but suspected that the UFO had come to New Mexico, for reasons that tie to the original detonation of the first atomic bomb.
