Live from Houston is WWE’s annual Tables, Ladders and Chairs event. This is one of the most packed events with almost every WWE title on the line.
First up, a truly unique event: a triple threat ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship.
Triple Threat Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Championship: Kofi Kingston v. Jack Swagger v. Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler
Winner: Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler
At one point, all three superstars were down and Vickie Guerrero entered the ring and began to climb the ladder. Kofi Kingston started up the ladder and then came back down to begin to lift the ladder causing Vickie to scream. And you know how she screams. Dolph Ziggler comes into the ring to beg Kofi to let the ladder go when Swagger brings in a ladder and takes out first Kingston and then Ziggler.
Incredibly, with Kingston and Swagger on the ladder, the belt falls to the mat and Dolph Ziggler scrambles to get a hold of the belt, retaining the title. Swagger and Kofi are angry (and that’s an understatement).
Backstage with the Nexus: Wade Barrett reminds the remaining members that their focus is getting back the WWE Tag Team Championship tonight and getting rid of the cancer that is John Cena. But David Otunga could not be there tonight thanks to the beating he received at the hands of John Cena last Monday on Raw (the beating included a chair).
Divas Tag Team Tables Match: Layla and Michelle McCool (LayCool) v. Beth Phoenix and Divas Champion Natalya
Winners: Divas Champion Natalya and Beth Phoenix
The best part about this was that Natalya was able to deliver a double sharp shooter on both members of LayCool. Then she was able to counter an attempt by LayCool to deliver Nattie through the table but she was able to push them into the table. But the match wasn’t over because the table didn’t break enough. So Natalya jumped onto LayCool to win the match. Outstanding!
As Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler said, “It’s cool to see LayCool laid out!”
We’re backstage with Kane who is alone in the darkness with a Christmas tree and some gifts. This is just weird.
WWE Tag Team Title Match: Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater v. WWE Tag Team Champions Santino Marella and Vladimir Koslov
Winners: WWE Tag Team Champions Santino Marella and Vladimir Koslov
This match was not a TLC match, but rather must be won by pinfall or submission. Remember also that a title cannot change hands on a disqualification or count out. This is something the other two members of Nexus at ringside would do well to remember.
Nexus finally got caught interfering in the match causing Nexus to be disqualified. They all jump on Santino and Vladimir and Wade Barrett comes out with a chair to assault both Koslov and Santino. A message for John Cena?
Remember kids, don’t try this at home.
#1 Contender’s Ladder Match for the WWE Championship: 2010 King of the Ring Sheamus v. John Morrison
Winner: John Morrison
Yes, there is a contract on a clipboard hanging above the ring.
John Morrison had a great momentum going until Sheamus was able to get his left leg caught in the rung of the ladder. Sheamus pushed the ladder over and Morrison landed right on his knee. Sheamus continued to take advantage of the injured left knee and Sheamus was able to get Morrison’s left leg back into the ladder and Sheamus used the ladder to pound the knee into the mat two times. I don’t even know how Morrison has been able to get back up. One thing is for sure, Morrison usual offense has been neutralized and Sheamus has been his usual vicious self. This is really hard to watch. Especially after both men go flying out of the ring and Sheamus lands on a ladder, bending it in half.
Against all odds — and you really had to have seen this to believe it — John Morrison has won the match!
Commercial break! Just in case you’ve been living in a cave and didn’t know that John Cena’s movie “Legendary” and The Big Show’s movie “Knucklehead” are available on DVD for the holidays, then you just got your reminder.
Backstage with Josh Matthews and WWE Champion The Miz. He wants to know what he thinks about John Morrison becoming the number one contender for the title. The Miz is confident that not only is he the new face of the WWE, but he is going to end Randy Orton.
Backstage and we find 3 members of Nexus sprawled on the floor with chairs. It looks like carnage.
WWE Championship Tables Match: Randy Orton v. WWE Champion The Miz
Winner: WWE Champion The Miz
The is the first time The Miz has had to defend his title in a Pay Per View event. Can The Miz do it? Yes, and here’s how it happened.
He’s had a lot of help from apprentice Alex Riley throughout the match. And it is completely legal for Riley to interfere because of the stipulations of the match.
So, Randy Orton accidentally knocks the official and The Miz out of the ring. Randy Orton turns his attention to Riley and puts him through a table. The Miz comes to, moves Riley out of the way and puts Orton in Riley’s place (this is just after a skull-crushing finale). The Miz then goes and wakes up the official to show him that it was Orton who went through the table and the official called the match. But it gets better!
After seeing the replay, the official restarts the match and, via Alex Riley, The Miz is able to put Randy Orton through a table and win the match.
Backstage with Rosa Mendes and Alberto Del Rio. I am not sure what they said (as it was in Spanish) and then Edge shows up in the car. Edge wants Del Rio, him, and Mysterio to team up and eliminate Kane. But Kane thinks all he needs is his natural class and ability.
Fatal 4 Way TLC Match for the World Heavyweight Championship: Rey Mysterio v. Alberto Del Rio v. Edge v. World Heavyweight Champion Kane
Winner: New World Heavyweight Champion Edge (for the 10th time!)
Let me just say that this match is truly every man for himself as they each lay waste to each other in pursuit of the Championship. At one point, Mysterio held Kane down on a table outside of the ring while Edge climbed up a ladder from in the ring and then jump down on to Kane.
And after all of the mind games Edge has been playing with him, I’m not sure I want to be either Edge or Kane right now.
Now that all of the superstars are out, Del Rio’s personal ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez tries to get Del Rio to get up. And when he couldn’t, he decided to climb the ladder himself. It was a good idea until Kane got to him.
There have been choke slams, 619s, and spears all over the place. But when it came right down to it, Edge was able to prevail.
Coming out to the stage area in a very dapper suit is “Dashing” Cody Rhodes. He says Christmas has come early to Houston. Their stockings will be stuffed with his dashing grooming tips. But, truth be told, he says that Houstoners (yes, that was his word) are carriers of IJS (Irritable Jowel Syndrome). He is referring to loose neck (think like a rooster). So his tip is not to stuff their faces during Christmas when they are on the list of the fattest cities in America.
And just in time, out comes The Bella Twins with Santa, I mean The Big Show, I mean Santa, giving out copies of the “Knucklehead” DVD. I think Rhodes is jealous because he hasn’t had any movie roles yet. But when it is all said and done, Rhodes is the one who ends up in his underwear. By the way, I guess Rhodes needs help because his underwear has the day of the week on it. Hmmm.
Backstage Husky Harris and Wade Barrett are heading out to the ring when Harris gets smacked by a chair courtesy of John Cena.
Joining Lawler, Cole, and Striker at the announcer table is the very capable CM Punk. I’ll tell you what, Punk has been doing a great job as an announcer on Monday Night Raw.
Chairs Match: Wade Barrett v. John Cena
Winner: John Cena!
You can use the chairs in this match but the win still has to come via pinfall or submission.
In case you forgot how this match came about, Barrett fired Cena after he was the special guest referee in the WWE title match between Randy Orton and Wade Barrett (the Free or Fired match). After being fired, he continued to lay waste to Nexus one by one until the rest of Nexus demanded that he be rehired or Barrett would be out of Nexus. This past week, at the Slammys, John Cena was rehired on the condition that he face Barrett at a chairs match tonight and face Otunga in a match this past Monday. We know what happened to David Otunga as a result of that match and Barrett is the first to get his hands on a chair in the main event.
At one point, Barrett has been knocked cold on the stage area and Cena goes backstage to retrieve a rolling chair and bottle of water. He puts Barrett in the chair, splashes water on his face, and rolls him down the ramp into the half of the steel steps he had set up for Cena. The winning move? Cena does an attitude adjustment on Wade Barrett onto 6 chairs. Yes, 6 chairs. But Cena isn’t through, is he? Nope. A couple of more hits of the chair and it’s over. Wait, no it’s not. Cena moved a pallet onto Barrett and then brought down about 21 chairs that were hanging on the ceiling onto Barrett.
