I was never a huge fan of Steve Carell. I found most of his movies to be too slap stick and his characters were very type cast. Honestly, I avoided watching most of his movies because I knew they would just annoy me. It was only recently that my opinion of him did a 180 and I became a fan.
One night, not too long ago, I was channel surfing. Nothing interesting was on and I ended up stopping on an episode of “The Office.” I decided to watch it because I had heard it was a good show. It was the episode where Mike was “Date Mike.” I laughed so hard I nearly busted my gut. After the episode ended my opinion of him had drastically changed. I immediately sought to find the entire show so I could watch it from the very beginning. I was already hooked on Michael Scott. After I got my hands on the DVDs I spent many nights after that lost in the show. Some nights I watched 4 or 5 episodes in a row. I laughed and laughed and all was well. Then recently, I heard some very disturbing news.
Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) with be leaving “The Office” after the 2010/2011 season and he won’t be returning. He is venturing off to a start a new show of his own. Good for him, I guess. I don’t know about everyone else but I am extremely disappointed. What is the fate of “The Office” once he is gone? Will it still be watchable?
Don’t get me wrong. Every character on “The Office” is great in her or her way. Dwight’s narcissistic insanity is hilarious. Jim and Pam’s awkward goofiness is adorable and heartwarming. Angela’s stern conservatism is a hoot. Stanley’s way too laid back attitude and Andy’s ignorant humor are fun to watch. Even Ryan’s self centered jerkiness and Kelly’s superficial banter are very entertaining. Each character has their own special trait that adds to the show’s greatness. The question on my mind though is this. Without Michael Scott’s antagonizing spirit to egg them all on, will the characters alone still be enough to hold our attention?
There were already a couple of episodes of “The Office” that Michael Scott was not in. The show proved to be just as watchable during those episodes but I can honestly say they were not my favorite. They were funny, but not as funny as they could have been had Michael been there. Although from a real life perspective, “Michael Scott” does not seem to be needed in his office. He is a lazy boss who often causes more trouble than he gets things done. However, from an entertainment standpoint, he is the glue that holds “The Office” together. I just don’t think the show will be the same without him.
I will continue to watch the show if it continues on without him. I am curious to see what will happen and what direction the show will take. I will miss Michael Scott though. Whatever new character they introduce to take his place definitely has some very large shoes to fill.
