Do you think that a 20-year-old secret has a real bearing on a relationship? If you found out that your spouse cheated with your best friend before you married him, would you wonder if your marriage was based on lies. What if it was only a one-night stand, and it happened while the two of you were separated?
These are the questions Lynette Scavo has been asking since she found out that her husband Tom cheated on her many years ago, back in college with her best friend, Renee.
Lynette and Tome were young and engaged. She was wondering if she was really ready to become a wife. Having doubts, they decided to take a time off, while they thought about their future. She went home for a few days.
While she was home, she had a moment of clarity. She was in love with Tom Scavo and couldn’t imagine life without him.
Meanwhile, Tom had a weak moment. In that weak moment, he found himself making love to Lynette’s best friend and college room-mate, Renee.
Lynette came back to college and told Tom that she loved him. They got married and eventually moved to Wisteria Lane. Tom and Renee never told Lynette of the affair.
Twenty years has passed. Lynette and Tom have the marriage that many craves, especially those on Wisteria Lane. Their friends have watched as they raised four children together. They watched as Tom stood my Lynette’s side as she battled cancer. They watched in shock as Lynette discovered she was pregnant again with twins and grieved with them when they lost one of those children. They even saw them going through tough financial times.
No, Lynette and Tom was not always the lovey dovey couple on the lane. Yet, they were the dependable couple that you knew would stand by each other through the good times and the bad.
Then Renee came back in their lives. Lynette was thrilled to reunite with her old college friend. When she moved onto the lane, she was even more thrilled. Yet, Renee had a secret, a secret she shared with Tom.
Tom didn’t want Renee to tell Lynette about their one night stand. He knew it would only hurt her. Yet, Renee couldn’t stand the lie. Finally, one day she spilled her guts out to Lynette.
At first, Lynette decided to take revenge on Tom, her own way. She would make him suffer in small ways, ways in which could let out her rage. She unscrewed the screws of his chair so it would fall backwards with him. She placed peanut butter on the stairs, so he would fall. She fixed it so his pants would split down the back when he bent over to pick up his keys. She did small little things to cause him small pain and embarrassment.
Renee found out about Lynette’s secret revenge plan and was worried that Lynette would actually hurt Tom. She told Tom what Lynette was doing and what.
Tom went home to confront Lynette, who tried to talk him into eating some brownies laced with laxatives. He stated he wasn’t hungry and offered one to Penny, their daughter, Lynette, threw them away to keep her from eating them. Tom then confronted her with the truth.
The question is will Lynette now forgive him?
Tom is now sleeping on the sofa, trying to make amends for a mistake he made twenty years ago. Lynette is trying to get passed the hurt she feels.
