UK citizens who need a passport for international travel must ensure that they are submitting the right passport application, or else their application will be denied. Which British passport do you need to apply for?
Adult Passport Renewal
Applicants aged 16 and above who are applying for a new passport (except first-time applicants) must apply for an adult renewal passport, provided they meet certain conditions.
If you still have your previous passport that was a standard 10-year passport issued to adults or five-year passport for children under the age of 16, the passport is undamaged and you do not need to make any name or nationality changes, then you can apply for a 10-year passport for adults with 32 pages or 48 pages.
First-time British Passport Applicants Over 16
First-time British passport applicants who are over the age of 16 must submit an adult application form, the same as adult passport renewal applicants. One of the differences for first-time British passport applications is that section 9 of the form must be countersigned to help establish your identity.
The person who countersigns your form must have known you personally for at least two years and work in a recognised profession and be able to state on one of the photographs that the photograph is a true likeness. Original documents are required when submitting supporting documentation. These will be returned to you once your passport is issued.
Children Under 16
Children under the age of 16 must be in possession of their own passport during international travel. Since 5 October 1998, children (including babies) cannot be included on their parents’ passports. Children’s passports are issued for 5 years and can be renewed later on after the age of 16 when the passport expires, at which point they will be entitled to apply for a full 10-year British adult passport. A child form is required when applying for a children’s passport.
British passport applications can be complex if you do not know what you need to apply for. There are also other categories of applications, not mentioned above. UK citizens renewing an old blue style passport, those entitled to a free British passport or those who need to change their name due to marriage, divorce or deed poll should refer to the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) or appropriate British Embassy or Consulate that serves their current location for further advice and details on how to apply for a British passport.
