If you are frantic about finding the perfect Christmas gifts, look no further. Here is a brief list of television series that would make a great gift for anyone this holiday season. Some of these shows are gritty, while others are funny but all of them are worth watching.
“Justified” – Season 1
This FX Network show premiered early in 2010 and was one of the best new shows to come out of the channel. The Show follows a U.S. Marshal named Rayland Givens; he’s a cowboy hat wearing lawman with a pension for shooting bad guys with his quick draw. It’s not as silly as it sounds the show is well put together and has a cast full of charming and colourful characters. Each week Rayland has a new escaped convict to kill or capture. All of the bad guys in the show are dynamic and interesting in their own right. There is also a season long story arc that revolves around an old friend of Rayland’s, Boyd who turned to a life of crime only to find salvation in Jesus Christ. Whether Boyd’s salvation is an act or not is revealed by the end of the season but the really interesting part of his character is just how nutty he truly sounds when preaching, or maybe it’s just that the actor who plays Boyd (Walton Goggins) also played the super slimy Shane in “The Shield”.
“Breaking Bad” – Season 3
If you are looking for a well acted drama to sink your teeth into or know someone who could use a break from watching “NCIS” level storytelling, this show is for you. “Breaking Bad” is an AMC drama all about a former high school chemistry teacher who learns that he has lung cancer and decides to spend his remaining time making enough money to ensure his family’s wellbeing after his is gone. The fastest way Walter White can think of making large sums of cash is through the selling of drugs, namely Chrystal Meth. Aided by his former student turned drug dealer Jesse, the two forge a relationship based on cooking Meth and making money.
Season 3 of “Breaking Bad” finds Jesse fresh out of rehab and Mr. White with a lot of money made for his family but no family left to give it to. As a result of all of Walter’s secretive dealings he has lost the trust of his wife. Though his cancer has gone into remission Walter has no cause for celebration. Some of the best parts of Season 3 come in the form of Walter rationalizing the actions that lead him to the state he is now in. Season 3 of “Breaking Bad” might not be the most action packed out of the series but the storytelling is well thought-out and the acting is amazing. “Breaking Bad” has rightfully been racking up Emmys for the past couple of years the latest of which was (rightfully) won by actor Aaron Paul who plays Jesse from the series.
