Zumba® fitness classes remain wildly popular with over 10 million people in more than 100 countries worldwide participating monthly. If you’re new to Zumba® fitness you’re probably wondering what to wear to your first class (and might also want to read What Is Zumba). Even if you’ve been attending Zumba® fitness aerobics classes for a while you might be wondering if what you’re wearing is helping or hindering your workout. Read on to find out what to wear from head to toe to help you have a great experience while reducing your risk of injury. As with any exercise program, be sure to consult your doctor before starting. I’m going to start with our feet and work up for this article.
Shoes: My Zumba® Fitness Class Recommendations
It’s important that your shoes have side-to-side motion stability, cushioning, and the ability to let you change directions rapidly while still providing support for your body. I personally have found it hard to locate aerobics or aerobic dance shoes at all lately and am using a cross trainer with extra cushioning. Remember to replace your shoes about every six months (if you work out daily) or when you start to notice any change in the level of support or cushioning they provide. Improper footwear in Zumba® fitness or any other aerobics dance class can lead to injuries, especially in your knees, ankles and hips. I especially want to caution you against wearing running shoes to Zumba® fitness classes. Running shoes do not have proper lateral (side-to-side) support. Also the heels are usually raised in running shoes which can make balance and stability an issue during a fast moving aerobic workout with rapid directional changes. ” Running shoes are not recommended by podiatric physicians for aerobics1. ” It’s important to have properly supportive footwear for Zumba® fitness classes.
Clothing: My Zumba® Fitness Class Recommendations
There’s a lot more flexibility in the clothing department than the shoe department when it comes to Zumba® fitness classes. Wear whatever makes you happy, as long as it is not so tight that your breathing or movement is restricted, that it is not so long that you might trip over it (especially with pants), and not so loose that you might get bound up in it (there is a lot of turning and twisting in Zumba® fitness classes). Personally, I like to wear body skimming clothes (not too tight or loose) with wicking properties (so the sweat is pulled away from my body and evaporates instead of sticking to me). People most commonly wear t-shirts, tank tops, workout pants, capris, shorts, Zumba® licensed apparel and dance clothes in my classes.
Undergarments: My Zumba® Fitness Class Recommendations
Zumba® fitness classes burn a lot of calories and are generally high impact (although you can modify it to low impact and a good instructor will demonstrate a low impact version of each move) so you definitely want a wicking material and supportive undergarments (not control or slim wear though – you want to be able to breathe freely!). It’s worth it to invest in a high quality maximum support sports bra. Titlenine.com ranks theirs with a barbell system (the more barbells the more support) and stores like Nordstrom have professional bra fitters that can help you find one that fits properly and provides sufficient support. Proper fitting undergarments are an important foundation for your Zumba® fitness class outfit. Improperly fitting garments can chafe and even injure your skin and that would definitely put a damper your Zumba® fitness class experience.
Socks & Accessories: My Zumba® Fitness Class Recommendations
For socks I recommend the kind made with a wicking fabric. The only accessories I take to my Zumba® fitness classes are a bottle of water, towel and my heart rate monitor watch. You definitely want to bring water. You could wear some kind of sweatband instead of bringing a towel. Heart rate monitor watches are definitely optional but I like to stay in a certain zone so I wear mine. If you choose to wear any jewelry or other accessories just be sure they won’t go flying across the room during class, catch on something else you’re wearing or cause any other type of hazard (poke you in the eye, scratch you, etc.). Safety is the prime consideration for accessories in Zumba® fitness classes.
Now you’re outfitted from head to toe. Zumba® fitness classes are super fun and I hope you enjoy yours!
