Motorcycles are no longer simple machines; they’re powerful, complex instruments of enjoyment. A good warranty provides insurance against high repair bills and picks up coverage when your manufacturer’s warranty expires.
These warranties normally cover mechanical breakdowns. Most policies require you pay a deductible for every warranty claim. Typical deductibles range from nothing out of pocket to as much as 100 dollars or more per incident. Almost all warranty companies require a pre-authorization before they’ll pay for a repair. Be sure to call your provider before permitting service and if changes or problems arise during a repair.
You’re obligated to maintain your motorcycle in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications in order to keep the contract in effect. This means keeping up with oil and filter changes and all other required maintenance specified by the manufacturer. Also, keep all related maintenance receipts in case neglect or your lack of upkeep is ever questioned.
Commonly covered motorcycle components include the engine, transmission, drivetrain, electrical system, steering and suspension, water pump, fuel system and gauges amongst other systems.
Be aware of the following:
Payable labor rates vary among warranty companies and so do the types of parts used be it new or refurbished.
Motorcyclists enjoy modifying their rides but understand that this will negate warranty coverage if the breakdown is a result of the modification.
A breakdown as a result of overheating is also not covered so be sure to check your bike’s operating temperature regularly.
They will not cover physical damage because of an accident normally covered by vehicle insurance. The warranty will not cover off road riding, racing, or any other form of misuse.
Points to remember:
Determine if your warranty covers repairs resulting from a road hazard. Road hazards can be anything from a pothole to random road debris. Motorcycles are very susceptible to damage because of road hazards especially to tires and rims. Having this coverage could prove invaluable.
Some companies include roadside assistance while others offer it for a surcharge. Some warranties will cover rentals; a certain allowance per day and for a predetermined amount of days. Some contracts start immediately while others enforce a waiting period of a minimum 30 days.
Read the fine print before you commit to any contract. Warranties typically start on a given date and or are based on your current odometer reading. The contract expires up to six years later or at a predetermined mileage established at the contract’s inception. Expect to pay between 600 to 1200 dollars for the average warranty.
