Today’s devotional focuses on a few verses of Peter’s speech to the crowd, after the Holy Spirit fell on the Day of Pentecost. It will attempt to answer what Peter was referring to by servants, or doulos.
18″Even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;”
The Nature of a Doulos
In today’s Scripture, Peter continues quoting out of the prophet Joel, this time in Joel 2:28-29. The word “servants” in this verse is more properly translated “slaves.” The actual Greek term was doulos, or bondservant. A doulos was a person who had a debt he or she could not repay, so the doulos would voluntarily become a slave of the person he or she was indebted to. What a great picture of the Christian life! We had a debt of sin that we could never repay. Jesus paid that debt through His sacrifice on the cross. So, in following after Christ, we become His bondservants . We do so voluntarily, of our own free will, knowing we can never repay that debt, but working all the harder for Him out of the joy that has flooded our hearts from the freedom He has wrought in them.
Yet, even on us bondservants, the Holy Spirit will be poured out. We do not deserve anything else, yet the Holy Spirit gives more, filling us up to overflowing if we but allow the gift of the Holy Spirit to flow into our lives.
Blood, Fire, and Vapor of Smoke
These promises of the Lord, coming first from Joel and then through Peter, are truly wonderful, but what does the “blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke” refer to? In Matthew 24:29, Jesus, quoting Isaiah, uses similar terminology to describe His Second Coming. Peter’s quoting of Joel refers to the Second Coming of Jesus, at which time there will be an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, greater than what was at the first. If you read anything by contemporary missionaries, they will tell you that the Spirit is being poured out mightily today in many places around the globe. Jesus is coming soon!
Please pray with me now: “Dear Jesus, I know You are coming soon. We don’t know the day or hour, but I thank You for the many blessings Your Holy Spirit is giving to me and many people around the earth. Please fill me up, Holy Spirit, that I may be a more effective witness for You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
