When you think of a woman being “high maintenance”, what characteristics do you imagine in that woman? Do you imagine that she is beautiful and uses her looks to get what she wants? Is she a diva-type? Is she materialistic and demanding? Does she like the finer things in life and pampering, but prefers to let some man supply her with that lifestyle, rather than obtaining it for herself? Is she a bitch and controlling when she does not get her way? Is she a golddigger? Is she super-picky about whom she dates? Does it require a lot of time, money and energy to make her happy?
What man would even want a woman who is like that? Gone are the days of eye candy and kept women. While there are some men that may still want a woman for her looks or sexual prowess, most men of today want a woman of some substance who can bring a little something to the table. They want a decent-looking woman who wants to be a part of their life in a positive way.
Think of Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner. He marries young, beautiful women, who are often one-third of his age and yes. they are beautiful, if you like that cookie-cutter, blonde, fake-boobed, Barbie Doll, bimbo look. They may even be in love with him and he with them. Who am I to judge how love manifests itself? But long before “The Hef” marries these Playboy Bunnies, he first exploits them for his own financial gain. They appear pretty much naked in his magazine, they wander around his mansion as eye candy and possibly other things for his celebrity guests and they escort him to functions. These girls do work, albeit not what most of us would deem work, but they do something to earn money and they have a boss and they get paid. It may be untraditional and frowned upon, but it’s technically a job. So can we call them golddiggers and are they high maintenance?
While a Playboy Bunny does not earn an annual salary, they do get paid for the amount of work that they do. For example, they make $25,000 to appear as the centerfold model. If a girl makes it to Playmate of the Year status, she gets $100,000. They can also earn $5,000 for advertising photographs, appearing in special issues and other things. Some Bunnies also make money just to appear in public, prance around the mansion and work at clubs. Many of these girls also receive other expensive gift items as bonus payments such as jewelry. They make about $20,000 for a movie appearance in a soft-porn movie. Add all of this up and these girls can generate a good income for themselves, which allows them to be financial viable and independent on their own, so can we call them golddiggers? Nope, not really, because they do work and make their own money. Are they high maintenance? Yeah, probably. And why shouldn’t they be? Why settle for less when it comes to mate selection?
I believe that the meaning of the phrase golddigger has not changed over the years, but the phrase, high maintenance has. A man who calls a woman high maintenance may do so because he may be desirous or a certain woman but knows he can never meet her expectations. The man may feel that her expectations are too high or lofty. Perhaps she simply wants a good life for herself and therefore can only see herself with a certain type of man as her life partner. Is that a bad thing? Really?
Why is it so wrong for a woman to want something out of life and want the man in her life to reflect that desire? Again, one must remember that there is a difference between a golddigger and a high maintenance woman.
A gold-digger is usually an attractive woman, who is not remarkably intelligent and lacks the wherewithal to provide a higher lifestyle for herself, therefore she targets men, using her sexual prowess and looks to get her what she wants materially. A gold-digger may not even have any feelings at all for the man, but will deal with him just because he is a means to an end. Golddiggers have no desire to better themselves, but only their lifestyles.
A high maintenance woman is usually the type that aspires to obtain a good life for herself and pretty much knows how to get what she wants through her own integrity. She is usual strong-willed and focused and often career-oriented, whether she’s an astrophysicist or a Playboy Bunny. Yes, she has exquisite taste and desires and enjoys the best, but a high maintenance type doesn’t care how she gets it as long as she gets it. It can come from her own ambitions or somebody else’s.
While a gold-digger is lazy, a high maintenance woman is a go-getter. A high maintenance type does not necessary have to be a beautiful woman, but she will usually carry herself like she is queen and present herself accordingly, whether the rest of the world thinks so or not. She doesn’t care what the rest of the world thinks.
Is it so wrong and so negative for a woman to desire to be treated well financially and in other ways, if she is a complete package, is financially secure on her own and working on her own self-improvement? What’s wrong with having higher aspirations when selected the man that you allow into your life. If somebody calls you high maintenance, consider it compliment. Nod your head graciously, smile demurely and say thank you sweetly.
