For the 2011 Westminster Dog Show, there will be dogs you haven’t seen at the show before. For the 135th Annual Westminster Dog Show, the organization will introduce six new breeds this year. The WKC event is known to host 179 different breeds of dogs and feature the best standards of each breed.
Sporting group – Boykin Spaniel
In the Sporting group, Westminster is adding the Boykin Spaniel. This breed of dog was developed in the Midland area of South Carolina for assisting hunters in retrieving waterfoul. The dog is nicknamed “apropos” for the fact it’s the “little dog that doesn’t rock the boat.”
Working group – Cane Corso and Leonberger
You will see two new breeds of dogs at the 2011 Westminster Dog Show in the Working group. The Cane Corso is an ancient Italian breed of dog medium-to-large size. It is large and muscular with an impressive appearance, known for watching over livestock and property. It was also used for helping hunt large game.
Another Working dog is the Leonberger, a large dog with a medium-lenght weather resistant coat consisting of yellow and red hues. It originates from nineteenth century Germany as a dog prized for its watch and draft abilities on farms.
Hound group – Bluetick Coonhound and Red Coonhound
In the Hound division, the Westminster Dog Show welcomes two new arrivals in 2011. The Bluetick Hound is named that due to its bluish colored coat with tick and black spot patterns. The dog’s ears, back and sides are all black. It’s known for its speedy and athletic abilities. The dog has been used to trail and tree racoons among other small game.
The Redbone Coonhound dog existed before the Civil War as a dog not only used for its abilities in hunting raccoon, bear, and mountain lion, but for its striking looks. The Redbone Coonhound has a sleek, red coat and a pleasing personality.
Herding Group – Icelandic Sheepdog
Icleandic Sheepdogs arrived with the first settlers on boats in Iceland. Possessing a thick coat that is practically weather-proof, the herding dog is under medium-sized and has prick ears with a curled tail. By nature, the Icelandic Sheepdog is extremely hardy.
Throughout the United States, major breeders and handlers attend the Westminster Dog Show to compete for titles in best of their division, besides Best In Show. The 2011 Westminster Dog Show airs Monday, Feb. 14 and Tuesday, Feb. 15 on USA and CNBC.Source: Westminster Web Site
