My husband uses the Westinghouse Christmas Light 24 Hour Mechanical Timer to regulate our Christmas lights. We also used this to turn the lights on and off in our home when we are on vacation, and it works quite well. Even though this is an indoor device, he still uses it outside in the winter to heat up the head bolt in his car, so it will start easier.
This wasn’t a very expensive device, we picked it up at Walmart for only $3.48. The Westinghouse Christmas Light 24 Hour Mechanical Timer is three and a half inches square, and plugs into any standard outlet. It is a 15 amp timer, with slide pin construction to prevent lost pins, has a manual on override switch, lets you set the timer in fifteen minute intervals, and has a grounded outlet and plug. Once it is programmed, it repeats these times on a daily basis.
The Westinghouse Christmas Light 24 Hour Mechanical Timer has a three wire polarized plug, and you need to plug it in near the device you want it to control. The instructions are included with the device, but this is not a hard timer to set. You turn it clockwise to line up the bold arrow to the current time, then after you have determined the time you want your lights to turn on, you push down the built in pins until the desired off time. These are not real “pins”, but rather black slices that go completely around the perimeter of the round dial.
You then plug your electrical lights into the timer and set the position to “ON”. There are some warnings on the instructions, one of which is warning the user not to use extension cords or any other type of adapter, and you must plug this right into the outlet. You cannot use this with devices that have any kind of heating element , (such as irons, space heaters, cooking appliances, etc.)
There is a savings guideline that is published on the instructions, stating how much money you will save annually by using the Westinghouse Christmas Light 24 Hour Mechanical Timer. Using it on a stereo system, for example, saves between $25-$30 a year. You can see how the savings would add up should you use this timer on several devices.
When we have our Christmas lights up, it is really nice that we can depend on the Westinghouse Christmas Light 24 Hour Mechanical Timer to turn them on every evening at 5:00 pm, and then turn off at 10:00 pm. We have not had any problems with this timer, it has been very reliable. Overall, I give it two thumbs up and would purchase this brand again.
