Every year on Christmas Eve, TBS airs a 24 hour marathon of the movie “A Christmas Story”. My family always gathers around together to watch our favorite Christmas movie. We usually start this special day off by decorating our Christmas tree and then we make popcorn, on the stove, not the microwaveable stuff of course, everybody settles down to watch the movie.
We’re from Terre Haute, IN and the movie is set in Gary, IN and it always makes us feel special when Terre Haute it mentioned twice in “A Christmas Story”
My sister , Morgan, and I curl up together on the couch and my parents and my grandma sit in their recliners as we watch “A Christmas Story”. We always watch it at least once, but usually end up watching it several times throughout the day.
My Dad knows the movie by heart so he recites lines along with the movie. This is always amusing at first but it only lasts until one of us get annoyed enough to throw something at him. He puts up a pretense of anger, but we all know he sees it coming.
My sister is an attention hog but she even enjoys “A Christmas Story” enough to sit down and be quiet for the duration of the movie. We usually fight constantly and pick at each other, but while we watch this Christmas classic we acting like siblings should, nice and loving.
My grandma and my mother usually chatter like hens, but during “A Christmas Story” they stay quiet, because this is an important tradition to everyone.
This year I will be spending Christmas away from home because I have since moved across the country, but my husband and I will start our own “A Christmas Story” tradition. Shockingly, he has never seen this Christmas classic, but I plan to fix that.
This Christmas memory is important to me because my family has a lot of problems, we fight a lot and rarely get along. Having this one moment to just sit and be together is special because it allows us to see that although we fight, we do still love each other and have the ability to show it.- we just forget how important that is at times.
I will never forget the wonderful memories that I have from the many Christmas Eves my family spent watching “A Christmas Story” together.
If your family doesn’t have a tradition like this one you should make one, because it’s a way to let everything else go for a few hours and just spend time together. It’s a way to show your family that no matter how you may act sometimes, you always love them.
