Wade Edwards’ death took place 14 years ago. When Wade Edwards’ death took place, his family first became acquainted with great tragedy. That same tragedy and loss was felt again yesterday when his mother, Elizabeth, passed away from breast cancer. Since his parents were major political figures, they had the resources to keep his memory alive, and have it live on for others. As such, when Elizabeth died yesterday, her will ensured that Wade’s death and memory wouldn’t be lost in the shadow.
After Elizabeth passed away, her last wishes were disclosed to the country. They revealed that she wanted any donations in her name to go to the Wade Edwards Foundation, which was formed after the loss of her son.
Before Wade’s death, his family wasn’t at the center of national politics. Yet John and Elizabeth’s son was already making a name for himself, as he was an honor student, writer and athlete. He even went to the White House for an awards ceremony thanks to an essay he had written.
Three weeks after that honor, Wade was killed in a one-car accident in 1996. Soon after, his parents formed a foundation in his name, which was designed to “reward, encourage and inspire young people in the pursuit of excellence.” Although Wade’s excellence was cut short, his memory could help further the brilliance of other young geniuses.
14 years after Wade Edwards’ death, Elizabeth joined him yesterday. Whereas her son’s death was sudden and came from nowhere, Elizabeth had given out after a long battle with breast cancer. In between, her life and marriage became national news, thanks to her husband’s run for vice president – and his affair years later.
By the time John’s affairs were discovered, Elizabeth’s cancer had returned. Therefore, the news of John cheating on his ailing wife turned even more people against him. It effectively ended his hopes for higher office, and eventually yielded a legal separation of the couple.
Elizabeth survived a lot, including the loss of her son, her initial cancer diagnosis, and a hard-fought presidential campaign. But finally the cancer fully claimed her, causing her to stop all treatments and prepare for the end.
Through it all, the memory of Wade clearly never left her, right up until the final moments. Now that the two are reunited, they are both being remembered together for their respective legacies. As their family grieves another painful loss, those they touched are right there to offer their comfort as well.
Wade’s foundation is at 714 St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh, North Carolina, and donations can be made via Paypal and via phone at 919-856-9233.
