Wade Barrett opened the Jan. 21 edition of Friday Night “SmackDown,” along with Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, and Ezekiel Jackson. The previous week, these four members came together as a group to take out the biggest athlete in wrestling today, The Big Show. First, Gabriel and Slater came out through the crowd to help Barrett in his match against Big Show. Big Show was handling the three of them before “The Guyanese Goliath” Ezekiel Jackson showed up and took him out with a monster clothesline, followed by a power slam. Barrett announced that his new stable will be called “The Corre” and each new member introduced themselves to the WWE Universe.
It was only weeks ago that Wade Barrett lost his number one contender match on Monday Night Raw, and thus was exiled and kicked out of The Nexus group by new Nexus leader CM Punk. Barrett was the leader of the original Nexus that debuted on Raw in June 2010 and consisted of the eight rookies on the first season of NXT. The Nexus had many changes in the months that followed, but one thing always remained the same, Barrett as leader. This led to Barrett getting multiple world title shots, but never winning that elusive title. After CM Punk took over leadership duties from Wade Barrett, Barrett went to the “SmackDown” brand.
Now that Barrett has another powerful stable taking his orders, he is set to take over an entire WWE brand once again. For over six months, Barrett and The Nexus ruled over Monday Night Raw with an iron fist and had everyone on the Raw roster in fear. The Nexus would execute beatdowns on any wrestler that got in their way, and would take out whatever wrestler they wanted to, just for their sheer enjoyment and no one could stop them. Barrett and The Corre bring those same sorts of qualities over to the “SmackDown” brand, and everyone should take notice.
The Corre made a big impact on their first televised appearance as an official stable. After giving their welcome speech to open up the broadcast, The Corre was involved in the main event of the night. It was announced that the World Heavyweight Champion Edge would take on one of the four members of The Corre. That member turned out to be high-flying South African, Justin Gabriel. It was a solid back-and-forth match with Gabriel giving a good account of himself against the reigning world champion. Gabriel picked up the victory after interference from the other members of The Corre.
After the match was over, Barrett, Slater, Jackson, and Gabriel gave Edge their finishing maneuver and stood tall in the ring with their hands held high. This is only the start of things to come for the other wrestlers on “SmackDown.”
