The Edwards family released a statement saying: “Elizabeth has been advised by her doctors that further treatment of her cancer would be unproductive She is resting at home with family and friends and has posted this message to friends on her Facebook page.” according to that CNN article.
Elizabeth Facebook page says the following:” You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces — my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined. The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that. And, yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human.
“But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know”.
I was saddened yesterday upon reading the news all over Twitter. While I don’t political agree with her I read her first memoir:”Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers” I love memoirs because I think life provides the best stories. I haven’t read her second book yet.
I was always impressed by Elizabeth Edwards grace and disposition. She lost her only son with only sixteen years of age in a car accident. Then she found courage knowing that pain and decided to have more children at an older age. She carried on a presidential campaign even so she found a lump in her breast. She then found out that she has cancer and fought it off for a couple years only to enter another presidential campaign where she then was informed that her cancer was treatable but incurable. She hid her emotional pain caused by her husbands (her high school sweetheart) cheating in order to advance him further. Then she was an advocate for those who lost hope due to illness and raised an hire awareness of cancer. In recent years she was a Health Care Reform Adviser to President Obama. And now even so she faces death she is able to be grateful for those who have supported her.
Elizabeth Edwards is the definition of a strong lady. While I am saddened by the news the outpour of love towards her on twitter and numerous articles pleases me. At least she gets to see it while still alive.
I am hoping that she defies the odds yet again. Doctors can’t put an expiration mark on people. They can only make a good guess. Only God knows. I pray that she still has an amazing time with her children and those who love her that the end doesn’t seem so threatening.
I hope she is lifted up by those who support her and read how much her life means to people.
In my opinion people like Elizabeth Edwards are rather spare and hopefully we can take her example for living our lives gratefully and hopeful until our end.
