Traveler’s making their way through the intersection of Fountain Boulevard and Newport Road in Colorado Springs, Colorado can’t help but notice “The Airplane Restaurant.”
Rising like a silver phoenix, the sheer sight of this repurposed Boeing KC-9 Tanker turned restaurant is sure to cause aviation aficionado’s hearts to take flight.
Because there are only a handful of restaurants like it in the world, it makes my list of unusual, American based restaurants.
What follows is a brief description of “The Airplane Restaurant” and what visitors to this aviation inspired restaurant can expect.
“The Airplane Restaurant’s” décor is what one would expect for an eatery located inside a circa 1953 Boeing KC-9 Tanker; industrial and replete with aviation memorabilia.
Though industrial by nature, the sleek and shiny interior is well appointed for comfort. Seating primarily consists of padded booths adequately illuminated with overhead lighting.
Currently “The Airplane Restaurant” serves traditional American cuisine for both lunch and dinner. It features both an adult and children’s menu.
Menu prices vary at “The Airplane Restaurant” depending on whether one is seated inside the plane or outside of it in the area the staff refers to as the “terminal.”
As for “The Airplane Restaurant’s” menu selections, diners can expect to see such classic comfort foods as chili, soup du jour, Rueben sandwiches, Cobb salad, potato skins, chicken strips, stuffed mushrooms, chicken wings, baked spaghetti, penne pasta, pasta alfredo, burgers and fries.
Lunch menu prices range from $7 to $17 for starters, $9 to $11 for salads, $10 to $12 for pasta entrees, and $10 to $16 for protein based entrees.

The all inclusive, $4.99 children’s menu includes a choice of entrée and a child size drink. Items on the children’s menu include but are not limited to such popular childhood favorites as macaroni and cheese, hotdogs, corndogs, chicken fingers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grilled cheese and burgers.
In addition to food, “The Airplane Restaurant” also serves themed, alcoholic drinks or what the staff refers to as “Jet Fuel.”
“The Airplane Restaurant’s” alcoholic drinks range in price from $5 to $6 and non-alcoholic drinks average $1.89 per drink, inclusive of refills.
