During my years spent working in the hospitality industry, I have developed a deep admiration for total immersion, themed restaurants.
Perhaps that admiration is part of what makes the “Mars 2112” restaurant on Broadway and 51st in New York City so near and dear to my heart.
Regardless, the management’s dedication to the Mars theme helps to make it one of the best, albeit unusual, restaurants in New York.
What follows is a brief description of the restaurant and some of what diners can expect.
Prepare to Blast Off
Upon entering “Mars 2112” it is abundantly evident that this is no ordinary establishment.
Restaurant staff members are dressed up in costumes pretending to be such characters as “Empress Glorianna”, “Captain Orion” and a legion of “Imperial Guards.”
The restaurant’s 35,000 square feet “Crystal Crater” dining room and “Mars Bar” are expertly appointed with alien inspired landscape such as a 300 square foot galaxy viewing portal and a “crystal tree” that reaches three stories into the air.
Televisions about the facility feature “Mars TV” programming and the tongue-in-cheek “Mars Today” newspaper can be found strewn about as well.
Once the “Imperial Guard” brings out the menus , intergalactic gastronomes may chose from a list of out-of- this- world inspired cuisine and libations.
Entrée prices range from $13.95 to $27.95 and alcoholic drink prices range from $5.50 to $11.95 each. Advance reservations are required for groups of 15 or more.
There is also a “Cyber Street” game room and an otherworldly gift shop that rounds out the venue.
Just in time for the Christmas season, the “Mars 2112 Restaurant” is offering a complimentary ice cream sundae to those who present a ticket stub from the celebrated “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” and purchase an entrée.
The annual “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” runs from November 5th, 2010 until December 30th, 2010 and tickets range in price from $45 to $105 dollars.
New Year’s Eve Specials
The restaurant will also be offering a New Year’s Eve package, details of which are available on the “Times Square New Year’s Eve” website .
