Whether you are enamored with the classic works of William Shakespeare or not, “The Shakespeare Garden” located in Montgomery, Alabama is worth a visit.
It is one of only seven gardens in the United States whose design, flora and fauna are centered upon the works of literary great, William Shakespeare.
What follows is a brief description of the garden and just some of what visitors can expect to find there.
Brief Description of the Shakespeare Garden
“The Shakespeare Garden” is part of a broader, 250 acre venue known as the “Blount Cultural Park.”
Among other things, “Blount Cultural Park” is home to the renowned “Alabama Shakespeare Festival” which annually draws over 300,000 visitors world-wide.
“The Shakespeare Garden” itself contains a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as thatched roof buildings and a 325 seat, six-tier, outdoor amphitheater.
The thatched roof buildings primarily consist of a pavilion and a public restroom replete with medieval style chandeliers.
For historical accuracy, the buildings’ conical shaped, thatched roofs were designed by “Wettstart International, Ltd. of England” and are comprised of a mixture of English combed wheat and Turkish Reed.
The massive, outdoor amphitheatre is a feat of engineering unto itself. It was designed to work in harmony with the natural environment and consists of rock ledge seats, crow’s nest lighting and a landscape that consists of a mix of aromatic plants such as lavender and rosemary as well as vibrant colored trees and shrubbery.
Highlights of the gardens include but are not limited to over 13,000 square feet of bulbous plants, 200 plus shrubs, fragrant herbs, 55 trees and roses that adorn hand-hewn, woven, willow wattle fences and arbors.
Each of the items planted in the garden are mentioned in at least one of William Shakespeare’s classic pieces of English literature.
