The south runways of “Akron Canton Airport” in North Canton, Ohio are home to a World War II themed restaurant devoted to honoring the “356th Fighter Group” who completed combat missions within the European theater.
What follows is a brief description of the restaurant, what diners can expect to experience while there as well as suggestions on other things to do while in the area.
The restaurant’s décor is circa 1940’s and contains photos and memorabilia related to World War II aviation history with special emphasis given to the “356th Fighter Group.”
Brief History of World War II 356th
The World War II “356th Fighter Group” was actually compromised of 3 different air squadrons who completed 413 combat missions during their service. The squadrons were the 361st, E60th and the 359th.
The group was stationed overseas in Suffolk, England and flew such historic war birds as the “B-17 Bomber”, “P-51 Mustang” and the “P-47 Thunderbolt.”
The lunch and dinner menus at the “356th Fighter Group Restaurant and Cabaret” are reasonably priced and contain items such as prime rib, sirloin steaks, meatloaf, beer cheese soup, “Bomber Sauerkraut Balls”, calamari, “apple pecan enchiladas”, pulled pork sandwiches, smoked turkey wraps, banana cream cheese cake, burgers, fresh seafood and assorted pasta dishes.
There are special buffet and sit down prices for groups of 28 or more people. An ample wine and champagne list is also available, including a special “356th Fighter Group” private label champagne that currently sells for $6 per glass or $15 per bottle.
Hours of Operation
As of 2010 the “356th Fighter Group Restaurant and Cabaret” is open daily, year round for lunch and dinner.
Monday through Thursday lunch is served from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm and dinner service is from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm.
On Friday and Saturday the lunch hours remain the same as during the week, however, dinner service runs from 4:00 pm until 11:00 pm.
Sunday brunch is served from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm and dinner service is from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm.
The cabaret is open Monday through Thursday until 11:00 pm, Friday and Saturday until 1:30 am and on Sunday until midnight.
Advance reservations are suggested though not required and may be made by calling the restaurant staff directly at 330-494-3500.
Group tour planners employing a World War II theme should note that the “356th Fighter Group Restaurant and Cabaret” is located approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes north from the “Tri-State War Birds Museum” in Batavia, Ohio.
There are two chain hotels, the “Red Roof Inn” and the “Microtel Inn and Suites”, located in North Canton for those that are looking for a place to spend the night.
While in the North Canton area travelers may also want to stop by the “Hoover Historical Center” and check out the products produced during World War II by the “Hoover Company.”
