Tonight’s UFC 125: Resolution, live from Las Vegas, Nevada, was an exciting event filled with explosive and unforgettable fights. Frank Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard knocked out an impressive five rounds of MMA bliss while Brian Stann destroyed Chris Lieben in a savage first-round technical knockout. Lieben boasted prefight that he would take all of Stann’s punches and come out on top, but a devastating knee to the face proved to be too much for the Portland, Oregon, native.
Maynard, the only fighter to defeat Edgar, came into round one of tonight’s title fight with both guns blazing. Edgar was knocked to the mat several times and it appeared that Maynard would end Edgar early and claim the belt. Edgar survived round one and came back in round two to even the score. The next three rounds were filled with impressive back-and-forth exchanges between the fighters, making the title bout easily the “fight of the night.” When it came time to announce the decision, Maynard was looking hopeful and Ddgar seemed defeated. But the score came in a disappointing draw, ensuring that these two titans will face each other again soon.
Brian Stann, the first fighter to ever use the word “golly” in the octagon, was anything but ho-hum when he exploded onto Chris Lieben, resulting in a first-round win over “the Crippler.” Lieben was knocked to the mat no fewer than three times, the final knockdown a devastating knee from Stann. Lieben looked like a zombie during the final moments of the fight, obviously fighting knocked completely out on pure instinct. Stann, the former United States marine and WEC light heavyweight champion, was classy and gracious as always in victory, dedicated his win to Sgt. Garret Meisner, a fallen Marine who died this past week in Afghanastan.
“I love you Garret,” Stann said while choking up, “I miss you. God bless your family.”
The Irish hand-grenade Marcus Davis looked to defeat Jeremy Stephens but was caught slipping, getting knocked down with a nasty punch followed by a Dan Henderson-style diving punch that closed the book on Davis. After his last few defeats, Davis is looking like anything but a hand grenade…more like a cooked dud.
Thiago Silva toppled Brandon “The Truth” Vera in an unexciting three rounds (I take that back, the first 40 seconds of round two weren’t so bad) that resulted in a unanimous decision for Silva. Thiago dominated for the majority of this snoozer of a fight and delivered to Vera an awesomely twisted broken nose-the worst I’ve ever seen from an MMA bout-before claiming victory. The fight wasn’t very exciting, but that broken nose will guarantee YouTube glory for this bout.
