UFC 124 Main Card
St-Pierre Demolishes Koscheck
Quebecois Georges St-Pierre took apart Josh Koscheck in front of a partisan crowd in Montreal, defeating Koscheck for the second time and putting an end to his trash talking for good. St-Pierre scored the first takedown about 20 seconds into round 1, but Koscheck evens it up with a takedown late in the round. However, St-Pierre got in a couple of good shots to Koscheck’s right eye, which is already badly swollen by the start of the second. GSP dominates the second round, landing several more punches on Koscheck’s swollen eye. The third round was the closest yet, with neither fighter landing much, but it probably went to St-Pierre 10-9. GSP scores a takedown early in the 4th round, taking the initiative early, but another slow round with Koscheck not doing enough. St-Pierre punctuates the 5th round with two takedowns, and Koscheck knows he’s beat. Georges St-Pierre wins a unanimous decision 50-45 on all three Judge’s cards.
Stefan Struve TKOs Sean McCorkle
The UFC 124 co-main card event pitted 6’11” Dutchman Stefan Struve against 6’7″ American Sean McCorkle in a battle of big men, and the bigger man won this time. McCorkle came on hard at the start, and took Struve down to the mat hard at 2 and half minutes into the first. It went back and forth for a while, but then Struve got on top and began to hammer McCorkle. McCorkle was unable to block most of the punches or work his way out and the ref called it in less than 30 seconds at 3:55 in the first round.
Jim Miller Submits Charles Oliveira
Jim Miller fought like the wily MMA vet he is in keeping clear of Oliveira’s submission attempts and pouncing for a knee bar submission when he got his chance. Oliviera tapped at 1:59 of the first round for his first loss as a professional.
Mac Danzig KOs Joe Stevenson
Mac Danzig KO-ed Joe Daddy Stevenson with one punch in this fight. Things were just starting to warm up when Danzig caught Joe Daddy backpedaling and put him on the mat with a vicious left hook. Fight over buy knockout at 1:54 in the first round. Joe Daddy did not even sit up for almost five minutes.
Thiago Alves Pounds John Howard
Thiago Alves won a unanimous decision against a very game John Howard in the first bout of the UFC 124 main card. Alves returned to form and looked like himself again as he hammered Howard throughout the fight, but give Howard credit for standing in and trading punches with the Pit Bull. The judges had it 30-27 Alves on all cards.
UFC 124 Preliminary Card
Mark Bocek Submits Dustin Hazelett
Mark Bocek trapped Dustin Hazlett in a leg triangle just a minute and 22 seconds into the first round to force Hazlett to Submit. It was the quickest fight of the night, but a pleasure to watch if you are a fan of good technique.
Dan Miller Beats Joe Doerksen
Dan Miller wins a contentious split decision over Joe Doerkson in the first televised fight of the UFC 124 preliminary card. It was a close fight, but the judges went 2-1 for Miller to the mild dismay of the majority of the crowd.
