My family and I eat almost all of our meals at home. This is because we like to eat nutritious, whole foods that nourish our bodies. When we eat fast food, we notice our stomachs feel gross and we are cranky, sometimes for days after the fact.
But there are days when we are out and about, busy days when I am not at home long enough to cook. I have often wished for a healthy fast food alternative, and apple sticks packed in a happy meal do not fit the bill for me. That is why I have been absolutely delighted to discover Tropical Smoothie Cafe.
My children love smoothies, and I am used to making them at home. I thought I would feel good about pulling in to the drive through at Tropical Smoothie and ordering my boys a fruity treat to tide their hungry bellies over until we could get home. I just assumed that they would have a nice selection of smoothies to choose from. And they do; their health nut smoothie is almost identical to the smoothies I make all the time at home, with blueberries, banana, mango, and almonds. And my kids loved the Sunny Day smoothie, with mango, banana, orange, and kiwi.
They have so much more than smoothies though, and I was amazed to discover that Tropical Smoothie has a complete menu full of tasty and healthy choices for every meal of the day! They have grilled flatbread sandwiches, stuffed full with real veggies and good stuff like pesto, guacamole, and hummus (not on the same sandwich though)!
My favorite sandwiches on their menu are on their amazingly delicious 9 grain bakery style bread. With choices like cranberry walnut chicken salad and turkey guacamole, it is really hard to choose!
They also have wraps. My husband adores the Jerk Chicken, which includes not only chicken and their yummy jerk sauce, but also black beans and corn and even asparagus! Many of their sandwich choices are loaded with veggies; the “Popeye’s favorite” has spinach and artichokes, and there are several choices including field greens. There are also totally vegetarian options, with hummus and other veggies.
Their sandwiches all look so good that I haven’t even gotten a chance to sample their salads, but I am surely intrigued by their TSC signature salad, which includes romaine, field greens, chicken, and also almonds, pineapple, blueberries, and carrots, along with their signature dressing.
Their drive through is efficient, so this truly is fast food, although it is healthier and tastier than any other fast food you can drive up for. But it is also worth your time to eat in at this restaurant, which is staffed by some of the friendliest employees I have ever seen working in a fast food (or any other, for that matter) restaurant.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe has two locations in Mobile, Alabama. On Dauphin Street across from Springhill Memorial Hospital, in the Legacy Village Shopping Center, and also on Schillinger’s Road, just South of Airport Blvd. There are also many locations scattered all over the United States.
Besides the eat-in and drive through options, they also do catering. And right now (Dec, 2010) the Mobile locations have a nice deal going on- if you buy a $25 gift card, you can get a free smoothie and mug. A gift card to Tropical Smoothie would be an awesome gift for anyone, or you can just get the free smoothie and mug today and keep the gift card yourself for your next visits.
Because once you try anything on their menu, you will definitely want to go back for more!
