I have been lucky enough to live in the Poconos for twenty years now and December in the Poconos is one of my favorite times of year. All of the small and large towns have Christmas celebrations, with beautiful decorations, and tree lighting ceremonies. Houses throughout the mountains decorate in their very finest lights and animated figures, and you can sense the feeling of holiday cheer.
The beautiful Main Streets of small towns come alive with horse and carriage rides during the weekends through December in the Poconos. Santa visits the small shops, while small children leap with excitement at the thought of seeing him. When the Christmas tree lightings are celebrated, carolers stroll the Main Streets and Courthouse Squares. Large wreaths decorate the vintage light posts, and storefronts display wonderful decorations. My family loves visiting a different town each year to participate in the activities. There is always a winter pleasure happening for everyone, so the whole family has a great time.
Along with enjoying the Christmas festivities happening in the towns or cities, you and your family can enjoy the winter pleasures of free or paid outdoor activities throughout December in the Poconos. When the temperature drops there is a great pond on Route 447, by the new East Stroudsburg Middle school, where you can ice skate all you want, at no cost. Imagine ice skating while being surrounded by evergreen trees with their snow covered branches bowing before you, it is a fine way for anyone to spend the day.
If you enjoy sledding, there are many hills where you can bring your sled, or toboggan and have fun gliding down the hill before you walk back up to do it all over again. When pulling your own sled back up a hill does not seem appealing to you, try going snow tubing at one of the ski resorts that open for business during the month of December in the Poconos. For a small price, you can relish in a pleasure filled winter day by having the resort tow you up a mountain in an individual or family sized tube, before you slip and slide down the slope, and get in line to tube again.
When you want to spend some time indoors, there are wonderful Christmas shows taking place during December in the Poconos. The Shawnee Playhouse is presenting the Northeast Ballet Ensemble performing The Nutcracker on December 12, 13, and 26. Showtime is 7 p.m. and ticket prices are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $8 for children. The Sherman Theater hosts a variety of Christmas shows including Christmas Mischief. Visit their website for more information.
Whatever your preferences are, you will always find something pleasurable to do during the month of December in the Poconos.
