When I think of visiting Singapore, a smile comes very quickly. I can’t help but love the climate, the nightlife, and the food. Many people who travel frequently will find this city very easy to navigate and the customs simple to adhere to. For someone who may only take a more exotic trip on occasion, there are a few tips that will help ensure that you have a pleasant getaway and wish to visit Singapore again.
You must have the correct documents, of course. Do make a copy of these things and place them in a plastic bag to keep with you at all times. This is something you should do when visiting any foreign country. US citizens do not need a Visa for up to a thirty day stay, however you must have a valid passport.
Climate and Clothing; The climate in Singapore can be classified as tropical. There is often unpredictable rainfall and the heat can be a bit oppressive. Taking the appropriate clothing is important, although if you would rather pack light and shop…the discounts on clothing are wonderful. Check the forecast for Singapore before visiting and take appropriate clothing; casual is fine except when visiting religious or holy places. At some restraints men are asked to wear a tie.
Customs and Strange Laws; There are certain customs and laws that may be a surprise to many people. For instance, I would advise against littering in any way, smoking in public areas, and chewing gum. Always take off your shoes if you are invited into someones home and rather than pointing it is considered polite to use your entire hand when making a gesture to another person. Crime is punished in a more severe manner than in many other countries; do respect the local laws while visiting.
Entertainment; Shopping, nightlife, sports, theater, and casinos are only skims the surface of the entertainment available in Singapore. If you love to shop then stop by Orchard Road where you can shop for days on end and find anything you can imagine. Nightlife is interesting as well. You’ll even find Irish Bars and ladies nights when drinks are free! Whatever your preference of music or club; chances are you will find it. A lot of the nightclubs will be in the particular districts so club hopping is fairly easy.
Places to Visit and Dine; You’ll find multiple points of interest and depending on how adventurous you are, Singapore does offer horseback riding, rock climbing, and yachting. If you aren’t quite ready to take flying lessons or zip-line and are looking for a relaxed vacation and sightseeing, then Singapore musts include Little India, Arab Street, Saint Johns Island (take a picnic), and Sago Street. Museums and theaters are found throughout the city and dining is as varied as the culture. Anything from Thai, to French, to Indian food can be found with ease.
After visiting Singapore, many people return for another trip and stay a little longer. There’s so much to do, it’s difficult to chose where to go and what to see. Whatever you do chose; enjoy!
