Since the tragedy in Tucson Arizona there has been one subject that has come to the front of the news, tougher gun laws. Lines have been drawn in our country with people who feel that tougher gun laws are needed to protect our country and those that feel that we do not need tougher laws. What do you think?
The statistics surrounding this very sensitive issue are just staggering. In one year 17,352 people take their own lives with guns. 683 children and teens kill themselves, 31,224 people die from violence which involves guns. 12,632 people are murdered, and finally 613 people are killed yearly due to gun accidents. To make the point stand out more each and every day 8 teens and children kill themselves with a gun, 268 people are murdered, and 86 people die from gun related violence 35 of these are murdered.
The sad part of this whole new topic on safer gun laws is that only 1% of the deaths related to guns is in self defense, the rest of the deaths are caused by murders, suicides, and accidents. What does this country need to do to put stronger gun laws in place to prevent these tragedies?
With these staggering statistics are you one of those that are still unsure about creating tougher gun laws in America? Every state in the union has different rules and some of them, in my opinion are just plain stupid. Take for example Arizona who last year passed a law that made it the third state that allows their people to carry a concealed weapon without needing a permit. Yet another law that Arizona has is that they are actually allowing citizens to carry guns into the bars as long as they are not drinking. Now you tell me what happens when you mix a bar and a gun. I don’t care if they are drinking or not fights still happen and, in a fit of rage, what do you think will be the first thing the individuals will grab, their gun.
The most shocking thing however is that Arizona with their lax in gun laws has a much lower gun crime rate than that of Washington who has much stronger gun laws. However, the movement to control gun laws has gotten very little, if any, outside of the major cities that actually validate stronger gun laws.
A recent study brought forward by the NRA, 25 states have adopted a well known saying “a man’s home is their castle” and because of this they should be able to protect it. Because of this, homeowners have a wide gap in the gun law that allows them to shoot a person trying to enter their home without permission.
The sad thing about the gun laws in America is that although we have had numerous mass shootings such as Virginia Tech, Tucson, and Columbine the government has made little effort to make stronger laws in the regards to guns and, this includes the federal level of government as well.
So, with all the mass shootings, and the recent tragedy in Tucson how many more people have to die at the hands of a gun? We need stronger gun laws in this country and we need them now. We need to stop giving guns freely to mad men that go out and commit mass murders because of voices in their head. Let’s all work together America and protect ourselves and our citizens let’s get some tougher gun laws passed in America.
