The gaming release schedule tends to be slow in the winter, pickup in the spring and then carry through the rest of the year. The release schedule for 2011 looks like it will be following this same pattern, but what sets 2011 apart is the number of great looking shooters planned for release. With so many games coming out it can difficult to figure out which ones to get. To help gamers with that here is a breakdown of the top upcoming shooters releasing in 2011.
Killzone 3 is scheduled to release for the Playstation 3 in late February. For Playstation owners it is the shooter to get in 2011 with a massive single player campaign, local cooperative play and a deep multiplayer mode. It has full Playstation Move and 3D TV support for gamers looking to try these new technologies in a big shooter. Beyond normal weapons and equipment Killzone 3 will feature vehicle based combat and heavy weapons.
Homefront takes military combat to the near future of 2027 with Korea invading the United States of America. Gamers will taking on the task of defending their homes. Homefront is slated to release in mid-March on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. The multiplayer has a heavy focus on team based combat and objective driven game modes. The single player campaign in Homefront is all about defending your own turf in a Red Dawn type plot.
Crysis 2 will bring Crytek’s famous PC franchise to consoles for the first time when it releases towards the end of March. Moving beyond the common shooter’s mechanic of focusing on the guns Crysis 2 instead focuses on your armor. Every player in Crysis 2 wears a nanosuit that can be customized allow for stealth, speed, strength or defense. Utilizing your nanosuit effectively will be crucial to playing well in both the single player and multiplayer modes.
Brink blends single player, cooperative and multpliplayer modes together and dynamically moves from between them based on how many people are playing. In Brink there is no good or bad side, but instead you will choose to play as the security forces or the rebellion when it releases on May. The game play is focused on customizing your character to your play style and allowing for freedom of movement across any terrain.
Red Faction: Armageddon continues the franchise’s core mechanic of highly destructible environments. The campaign’s story is set 50 years after the events in Red Faction: Guerrilla, but still takes place on Mars as the colonists struggle for survival. Red Faction: Armageddon is coming to Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC in May.
Resistance 3 is set five years after the events in Resistance 2 in 1957. Fight to protect your family and continue the story of Joseph Capelli in this first person shooter. Resistance 3 has a release date set for September and is Sony’s big shooter for the fall and holiday season this year.
Gears of War 3 brings back the series’ cover based combat on the Xbox 360 when it releases this holiday season. End the Locust threat with three friends in the cooperative campaign mode, or jump into the deep multiplayer experience with up to 10 people. In addition to these standard game modes Gears of War 3 is bringing back the cooperative Horde mode, and will add a new mode allowing gamers to play as the Locust with Beast mode.
Ghost Recon: Future Solider is the long awaited continuation of this military shooter franchise. Gamers play as a 4 player squad through the campaign, or join up to 16 player cooperative and competitive matches when Ghost Recon: Future Soldier release in the Fall. The core game play focuses on using advanced squad tactics and realistic futuristic weapons.
Battlefield 3 is Dice’s next installment of squad based vehicular combat. Based on a whole new game engine this first person shooter adds jets, boats and 64 player matches to the Battlefield series. With fully destructible environments and urban combat there are new and exciting tactics to try when any wall can become a door with the help of a grenade. With the goal of large scale combat Battlefield 3 is due out on late 2011.
