There are no upgrade cost to file if you are self-employed or run a business like most other programs. If you choose to import information from last year’s taxes it cost $9.95 or for $17.95 you can upgrade to import last year’s information and file your state return. I have personally used this program and would highly recommend it to anyone.
The H&R block tax software is one of the most popular programs on-line. It will check for errors and is easy to use. They offer a basic service that is free or you can upgrade to import information from last year’s taxes for $19.95. If you are filing self-employment income you need the $49.95 version, and if you plan to claim a homeowner exemption or investment income then you need the 29.95 version. I used this program for several years until I realized I could use Tax Act and do my taxes totally free.
Jackson Hewitt on-line offers three packages. The basic program is free and recommended for people with no dependents to claim and a simple return that needs filed. The middle program is for the average person with dependents or anyone who itemizes it cost $27.95. While the top end program is intended for people who own a business or are self-employment and cost $45.95
Turbo Tax basic program is $19.95 but is only charged when you file. Their deluxe version will help maximize your refund but will cost you $29.95. If you are claiming investment or rental income you need the premier version which cost $49.95 and if you own a business or are self-employed then you need the home and business version which cost $74.95. I have used this program but prefer Tax Act because it is free.

This was the first program I ever used to file my own taxes. It works great but I had a problem with filing for rapid refund using this site so I will never use it again.
Tax Slayer’s basic free program is only for filing a 1040ez form. If filing a 1040 or 1040a you need the $9.95 classic edition and for business or self-employment you will want to use the Premier edition for $19.95.
ezTaxReturn cost $29.95 to file a federal return. This program has a good interface that is helpful to anyone wanting to do their own taxes but has limitations as to the forms it supports.
Proline tax on-line cost $29.95 for the program to file a 1040, 1040a, or 1040ez form. It includes the state tax form for the same price but the web site can be a bit deceiving. It states the price for filing a single return is $9.95 but it only applies if you file multiple returns.
ETax offers free software to complete the 1040ez form. Then you need to upgrade to the deluxe software for $29.95 to complete the 1040 or 1040a forms. They recommend the premium software which cost $49.95 for businesses.
Esmarttax offers a basic program for the 1040ez form for free. Then you can upgrade to the deluxe version for $19.95 and $39.95 for the premium business version. This program is not as user friendly as others.
