America has seen her fair share of tremendous First Ladies, which you can read all about on the White House’s official government page, but who is the fairest of them all? Looking at the women who graced our political radar in the 20th century and beyond, here are my top ten picks for the most beautiful First Ladies of the United States.
10. Barbara Bush
Barbara Pierce’s charm helped her nab her man–the utterly desirable George H. W. Bush–early on in life. The two had six adorable children together, which she so gracefully raised behind-the-scenes. Her pet project of universal literacy isn’t unattractive either.
9. Pat Nixon
Thelma Catherine “Pat” Ryan, the hard-working mom who grew up in California, always had a winning smile, which surely benefited the charismatic and well-traveled First Lady set on promoting the practice of volunteerism among other causes.
8. Betty Ford
Some of us remember Elizabeth Ann Bloomer, t he outspoken feminist, more than we remember her presidential husband. The former dancer and fashion model always knew how to leave an impression.
7. Lady Bird Johnson
The glamorous Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Taylor worked to help beautify the country’s cities and highways, no doubt having learned a thing or two about beauty just from looking into a mirror. Whether she’s decorated in pearls or her Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal, nobody outclasses Lady Bird.
6. Hillary Clinton
Hillary Diane Rodham, the savvy and politically-minded law student originally from Illinois, may have some fooled by her eclectic set of pantsuits, but the former First Lady knows how to stun when she wants to.
5. Nancy Reagan
Nancy Davis, the Hollywood actress who struck gold in marrying the then-president of the Screen Actors Guild, has had her critics. After all, her natural beauty and taste for high-end fashion is going to make her a target–a stylish and sophisticated one at that.
4. Rosalynn Carter
Southern Belle Eleanor Rosalynn Smith, having wooed Mr. Jimmy Carter back in the day, was able to sit pretty–both literally and figuratively–when it came her turn to take over the White House.
3. Michelle Obama
Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, even as First Lady, plays by her own rules–looking stunning while at it. The fashionista wears what she wants and has the figure to do so.
2. Laura Bush
Laura Lane Welch, the tall drink of water from Texas–save for the fact that she’s not actually notably tall, packs quite a beautiful punch. Without even playing up her looks, Mrs. G.W. always has a sparkle in her eyes.
1. Jacqueline Kennedy
Style icon Jacqueline Lee Bouvier is a natural choice for the most beautiful First Lady of the United States. Those eyes, that hair, that effortless flair–what a woman!
