Super Bowl commercials are one of the best parts of the game every year. To be honest, I look forward to the originality all the companies have come up with every year for their commercials much more than I look forward to watching football. Even for the non-football fans out there, the commercials for the Super Bowl are reason enough to watch the big game. They are the topic of conversations days after the game is over, and let’s not forget the many spoofs made on YouTube after the game.
One of my favorite commercials last year was the IHOP commercial with the talking banana. I sang the song “Nannerpus” for days afterward, stupid as it was. The commercials for this year’s Super Bowl were just as entertaining and humorous as years past. Here are my top five commercials for Super Bowl XLV:
1.) Doritos Dog Commercial- Selling Spicy Nacho Doritos.
A man is standing at a glass door with a bag of chips telling the pug that’s outside to “Come here, boy!” The dog starts running up to the door, while the man’s girlfriend tells him not to mess with her dog. The dog continues running to the door as the man continues to coax him, and the dog ends up knocking over the door on top of the man, and begins to eat the bag of Doritos. I loved it because you knew that the dog was about to outsmart the man. Watch here: Doritos Dog Commercial
2.) Chevy Cruze Eco- Chevy is promoting its new car.
A clip of the car comes on in a nursing home and all the older residents are discussing what they think the clip is about. Each one has misunderstood the car commercial. A young woman is sharing with the residents about the Chevy Cruze Eco, while an old man keeps thinking she’s saying “echo.” An old woman keeps correcting him. All the senior citizens are making their own assumptions about what the commercial means. A man at the end says, “Turn up the volume!” This was humorous because if you’ve ever tried to explain something to an older person, you know how difficult it can be. 3.) Pepsi Max- Promoting the new Pepsi Max, with zero calories.
A group of “cool” guys is making fun of a nerd, Werner. Suddenly, a button is pushed on his lawn chair and a cooler opens and we see a large amount of ice cold Pepsis. A Pepsi Max is catapulted at the nerd, and he begins to drink it. As the “cool guys” continue to laugh at Werner, the cooler reopens and a Pepsi Max goes charging out of the cooler and hits the guy who was making fun of the nerd. Victory has been won. Everyone likes to see the underdog win, and this made you have a warm and fuzzy feeling. Watch here: Pepsi Max Torpedo Cooler
4.) Second Doritos Commercial
Doritos is promoting several brands of Dorito chips in this commercial. The owner of the apartment tells the house-sitter that he’ll be back next Thursday and leaves. The sitter is eating a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos. Suddenly, it’s a week later, and the guy is still on the couch eating. He looks over to the fishbowl and sees that the goldfish is dead. He puts some Dorito crumbs into the bowl and the fish comes back to life. He then revives the plant with Dorito crumbs. Suddenly the whole apartment is clean, and then he knocks over the urn on the mantle, spilling the ashes. The owner of the apartment comes back in, and we see an old man sitting on the couch eating Doritos with the house-sitter. The man is surprised and says “Grandpa? I missed you!” This commercial made me literally laugh out loud because you didn’t see that coming. This was one of the funniest commercials to me. Watch here: Doritos House-Sitter
5.) Bridgestone Tires- Bridgestone is promoting their tires.
A man in an office sends an e-mail to his friend who is also in the office. His friend tells him that the e-mail was “reply all.” The man freaks out and gets in his car and starts on a rampage to take everyone’s computers and laptops. He makes it back to the office in record time, only for his friend to tell him that the e-mail was only to him and he was mistaken. This was that “uh-oh” moment that we’ve all had in life, making this commercial funny. Watch here: Bridgestone Reply All E-mail
These commercials are what the Super Bowl is all about. Not only do they promote their items well, but they give us laughs and conversation topics for a good week or so! I hope you enjoyed watching the Super Bowl, even if your team of choice didn’t win.
