It’s tough being the new employee. Sometimes trying to find where you fit in with your new coworkers can be tricky. Here are some quick tips on making yourself at home in your new office.
Conversation Starters: Your coworkers are curious about you. They want to know how you will fit in with the established dynamics of the office. Bring in some interesting photos of people or pets that are important to you if you are allowed to have personal items in your work area. This gives coworkers an opportunity to ask questions about what you brought in. Not allowed to decorate your space? No problem. A unique piece of jewelry or even a trendy handbag can strike conversations with most ladies. This tip goes both ways. Ask Sally in the cubicle next to you who is the little girl with freckles in the photo on her desk. You can be sure she will have plenty to say on the subject. Remember, if it is on display in their work area, your coworkers will be more than happy to share their pride and joy.
Pack a Picnic for Two: Food brings us all together. Why do you think we eat when we celebrate? Why do we eat when we are stressed? The truth is, we all have to eat. It’s something that we have in common. Are you a good cook? Pack your lunch and bring extra to share. On any given day someone will forget to pack their own lunch or realize that they just can’t eat another vending machine meal and they will be grateful for the grub. A word of caution, wait to try something new, no one likes being a guinea pig, especially when it means spending the rest of the afternoon in the restroom.
Stuck on You: So what if you are the eighth Sales and Marketing Associate this year at Revolving Door Advertising? The position has had a lot of turnover. Your new coworkers may not expect you to stay for long and therefore not see the point in forming a relationship with you while you are there. Be sincere, if you truly think that this job is for you, speak up. Let them know how much you like the position and talk about future things you would like to do in your new position. Speaking about the future indicates to others that you foresee yourself staying on with the company. Once they know you’re sticking around, they will be inclined to open up.
Finding your place in a new company is never easy. Trying to fit in on top of learning a new job can be stressful. If nothing seems to work, remember to smile. It makes you approachable and you might just make a new friend.
