Every year when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences throws its annual Academy Awards, named affectionately the ‘Oscars’, the elite of Hollywood gather together to pay homage to each other, dress to the nine’s, and later attend legendary parties. The fun doesn’t need to be limited to just the hoi polloi – you too can enjoy an Oscar night to remember. The Academy Awards can be an excellent excuse to break out that new big screen TV purchased for the Super Bowl, your party best, some excellent food and drink, and good friends. These tips help create an evening to remember.
Start Early: Depending on your time zone, you’ll need to check your local listings to make sure you don’t miss a minute of the exciting event. This includes not only the awards ceremony itself. Often the best, most interesting, and often embarrassing viewing is during the red carpet interviews.
Prizes: Everyone should fill out an Oscar ballot at the door, and throughout the evening spend a little time tabulating scores so you know who is in the lead. You should also award prizes for best costume (see below) and if throwing a potluck amongst a foodie crowd, consider best food as well. Prizes can be simple – the honor is in the bragging rights. Possibilities include DVDs of past Oscar winners, movie tickets, bottles of inexpensive Champagne, and the like.
Everybody Dresses Up: Repeat. Everybody dresses up and the best costumes get the best awards. We all know the best Halloween parties are the ones where everyone checks their dignity at the door and gets into the spirit with crazy costumes. Oscar night should be no different. Gentlemen should wear a suit and tie (or better yet – you’d be surprised and how many of your acquaintance have an old tuxedo lurking in the closet.) Ladies wear their best evening finery. Prizes can and should be awarded for creativity and elegance.
Signature Cocktails and Appetizers: If you run with a crowd that likes a drink or two over the course of the evening, consider greeting your guests with a pitcher of an Oscar themed signature cocktail to get the evening started. You can’t go wrong with simple drinks like Margaritas or Mojitos. Or if you’re feeling particularly adventurous you could try searching for a few Oscar themed cocktails (the Brad Pitt and the Angelina Jolie look fantastic!) And to soak up some of the drink, or if you’d prefer a more circumspect event, a good array of easily nibbled appetizers is necessary to have on hand while everyone is glued to the set. Small plates bearing food that can be eaten by hand and with little mess (to protect the fancy clothes) is best.
A movie going crowd can try to make group trips to the nominated movies ahead of time. But we don’t all have that kind of time and foresight. Most importantly, get a good group of friends, generate some excitement ahead of time, and have a wonderful evening hobnobbing with the stars!
