Dogs can have a lot of energy. They like to run and play. There are advantages to burning off a dog’s energy for both the owner and the dog. The dog enjoys getting exercise, and the owner can have some peace and quiet while the tired dog is relaxing or sleeping afterwards. I would like to share three ways that I have helped my dog, a golden retriever, to get exercise and use up his energy.
One way that I exercise my dog is by taking him for a walk every day. I started by just walking him around the block, but we eventually started walking about a mile. It can be difficult for working people to walk their dogs every day, but it can be possible to walk a dog in the morning or at night. My dog will go for walks when it is dark outside, although sometimes he gets scared and freezes up when he sees people standing in the dark.
Another way to help your dog get exercise is by taking your dog to a dog park, where he or she can play with other dogs or chase balls. Different dogs will act differently at a dog park, however. Some dogs will wrestle with other dogs and chase each other around the park. Other dogs might act nervous and not want to approach other dogs. Also, small dogs might not be able to handle playing with larger dogs. However, the dog park that I visit has mostly friendly dogs. There is even a sign that says that mean or vicious dogs are not allowed. As long as you are careful, a dog park can be a great place to let your dog run free and enjoy the open space.
If your dog enjoys the water, a third way to exercise your dog is by taking your dog swimming. This is another time when you need to be careful and watch out for your dog. If you take your dog to a lake, you have to make sure that your dog doesn’t swim out so far that he or she can’t make it back to the shore. If your aren’t sure whether your dog is comfortable swimming, you can buy a life jacket for your dog. It is also a good idea to not let your dog swim out so far that you can’t swim out after the dog. As long as you are careful and your dog enjoys the water, your dog will have fun and get a lot of exercise by swimming. There is a pond a few miles away from my house where owners can let their dogs go in the water. I usually throw a ball into the pond and let the dog retrieve it for me. My dog never seems to get tired of this and will keep going until I decide to go home.
These are just three possible ways to help your dog get exercise. My dog enjoys all three of these activities, and he is satisfied and ready to rest after doing them.
