Three Academy Award Categories No One Pays Attention To — And Why They Should

by tree pony

The 83rd annual Academy Awards (Oscars) are quickly approaching- less than one week left! Those watching always tune in to see who wins the big categories such as Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role and the most coveted award — Best Picture. But the Oscar Awards have way more categories than just that. Some probably aren’t as significant, but some are ones you should definitely watch. Why? Well, because they really help to shape how a film is made, and they play a crucial role in why that film is even nominated for an Oscar to begin with.

Visual Effects Award

One of the first things that makes a film great is the special effects/visual effects that the movie has. The visual effects often times really make or break a movie. For instance, the reason Avatar has won so many awards and was nominated for many more, like Best Picture in 2009, was the special effects really made that movie. Although everyone pays attention to the special effects in movies, rarely ever do people pay attention to the Visual Effects Awards at the Oscars, but they really do make the movie great..or terrible.

This year, there are five great movies nominated- Alice in Wonderland, Inception, Hereafter, Iron Man 2 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Costume Design Award

Costumes are another feature of a movie that can really make it great or make it terrible, especially when you’re talking about a movie that is set in certain time periods or war eras. Costume awards never get much recognition because people don’t realize how truly important they are, especially to the setting of a movie.

This year’s nominees are Alice in Wonderland, I Am Love, The King’s Speech, The Tempest and True Grit.

Best Director

Nothing will get done in a movie without a director. Although the award has received a lot of recognition in the past, it’s been dwindling the past few years for some unknown reason. The director is the brains behind the movie and what makes the movie great. They have one of the hardest jobs in the film industry, and directors truly deserve more recognition.

This year’s nominees are Black Swan, The Fighter, True Grit, The Social Network and The King’s Speech.
