I am a journalism student only three semesters away from graduating, and Associated Content and the Yahoo! Contributor Network have given me an opportunity to write and earn money while going through college. I’m a contributor in three categories and have been published on Yahoo! TV and Your Wisdom. The Yahoo! Contributor Network has been the most fun because it allows me to write in my favorite topics, such as health, beauty, fashion and entertainment.
As a student, I’m still learning how to write using AP style and making sure everything is grammatically correct and well read. In school, editing and reporting classes have given me the fundamental tools I need to improve my writing, and submitting content for the Yahoo! Contributor Network allows me to practice and apply my knowledge to articles I publish.
In the past when I wrote exclusively for Associated Content submitting my own articles, I would not have considered it ideal to put on my resume. Becoming a contributor in the heath and wellness, shopping and fashion, and beauty categories now compliment my resume because I am given assignments and guidelines to write with. Though I have freedom to choose my topic within the assignment, I feel that being a contributor will be looked at more desirably than if I were just submitting articles.
When Associated Content became the Yahoo! Contributor Network, I was excited because it came with more opportunities – some of which I have had the fortune to experience. I was offered higher paying articles to submit to Yahoo!’s Your Wisdom and was also offered a chance to write for Yahoo! TV as a superfan. These two sites are read by hundreds – or even thousands – everyday, and the Yahoo! Contributor Network is giving me a chance to put my name out there. As a college student, these opportunities are exciting and rewarding to not only earn money but obtain clips for a portfolio to showcase at potential jobs after college.
Ideally, my dream has been to work at a fashion, beauty or entertainment magazine. Thanks to my contributing to these two different platforms with the Yahoo! Contributor Network, I feel as though I’m able to express myself while improving my writing.
While I wouldn’t be able to live off of my earnings writing for the Yahoo! Contributor Network, the pay for contributors and special assignments is very competitive. Essentially, I have a great paying internship and it’s with a company I am proud to associate with.
