It was winter time in the small town upstate New York town. Everyone was getting ready for the annual winter parade. Amelia was so excited; she couldn’t wait for classes to end and Christmas break to start. She gathered her notebooks and jumped on the bus. This year her father, Mr.Smith promised Amelia she could help him decorate one of the floats he worked on.
As the bus pulled up to the stop, momma and Lucky were waiting at the stop for Amelia to get off. Lucky, Amelia exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around the big white dog; Lucky resembled a furry miniature pony rather than a dog. Momma walked both of them home.
At home, momma baked fresh rolls for dinner as Mr. Smith was out in the shop. For two weeks now he had been working on a winter wonderland float fit for the parade. Each year Mr. Smith would work on his float and the day of the parade he would give his daughter one gift earlier than her others.
Amelia took Lucky and headed into the garage. Both Mr. Smith and Amelia spent the next few hours painting flowers white and gold for finishing touches. When finally ready to turn in for the night, Amelia cries out Lucky’s name. No answer, no happy dog bark this time. Lucky she calls out again..still nothing. After looking around the place, Amelia notices that she had left the garage door open and her dog must have ran out. Momma assures her daughter that Lucky will come back soon.
That night, Amelia barely slept, all she could think about is her poor pup out there lost in the cold. She tries to close her eyes and imagine better things, after all tomorrow is the winter parade.
Next morning, the family goes bright and early to set up for the parade. Mr. Smith gets his float ready to go. As the parade starts, Amelia and Momma stand on the side cheering on the floats and performers. Every year there is a new dance troupe brought to town just for this special day. The final event is always when Santa’s sleigh comes rolling down the town square.
Walking up to them momma and Amelia comes their neighbor, Mr. Finworth. He is holding what appears to be a baby wrapped in sheets. Hello, Mr. Finworth says. I think you have lost something and he begins to unwrap the sheets and who else does Amelia see but Lucky. He jumps up and barks at her as she wraps her biggest hug around him. Mr. Finworth explained to momma that their dog wandered into his yard yesterday.
Amelia was so happy. This was way better than any winter parade she had seen in years. This year she received the best present she could: her dog.
