The Vampire Diaries “Daddy Issues” Season 2 Episode 13 Recap

by tree pony

Last time in Mystic Falls: Damon staked Rose to put her out of the agony of her werewolf bite and went off the deep end because of his conflicted emotions, Stefan invited Uncle John Gilbert back to town while Jules invited more werewolves.

Caroline left her house in the morning. Tyler was there waiting and told her they needed to talk. Care said she knew and then proceeded to talk about their kiss. She told Tyler that her and Matt were still involved so they could only be friends. She was going to her car when Tyler asked her about Mason. If Caroline knew that Stefan and Damon killed him. She was taken aback and Tyler told her that he trusted her and she lied to him. Caroline told him that she only lied to protect him. Sort of like Elena with Jeremy. He stalked away. Jules came over to his house to convince him to leave town with her. Tyler didn’t want to leave. Caroline texted Stefan with: “911 now,” so Stefan found out that Tyler knew they were vamps and confronted him in his house. Stefan told Tyler that he just wanted to live a normal life and didn’t condone the killings. Tyler tried to call Jules but got interrupted by Stefan. Jules told Stefan to bring her Tyler and she would be happy. Then she walked over to a large RV in the middle of the woods and made out with a hot new werewolf Brady whom she had summoned to town through the werewolf network. She told him they only wanted “the boy” not vengeance on the town’s vamps.

But enough with the wolves, let’s get to the real action: Damon’s shower! OMG! That scene was so awesome. First there was the teaser with the water drops falling down from a super sleek showerhead. Then Damon’s shirtless, presumably naked body, moved into the frame. And if that wasn’t good enough, he started soaping himself up. Ahhhh! Darn – it didn’t last long enough… because Damon got distracted by the local news on his flat-screen TV outside the bathroom. It was reporting on the missing girl whom Damon had the heart-wrenching dialogue with at the end of last episode and apparently sucked dry. What happened to “snatch, eat, erase?” Anyway then a clothed Damon chatted with Stefan about John Gilbert and how Damon still didn’t trust him. Stefan said that John knew how to protect Elena except John hadn’t told him what that was yet.

Meanwhile at chez Gilbert, Uncle John was trying to be nice to Elena. Elena wasn’t convinced. Then Jenna and Alaric walked in and were shocked to see him. Jenna told him that he couldn’t stay there and she was the kids’ legal guardian. Then to distract Jenna from her rant, John decided to drop the bomb that he was Elena’s birth father. Jenna of course was shocked and Elena mumbled that she was going to tell her.

Carol Lockwood was headed over to the grill for a memorial that included the girl Damon killed last week. On the way inside Uncle John bumped into Jeremy who looked really cute with windswept hair. Anyway Jeremy was also unhappy to see John and asked if he came back for his ring. John told him that the ring was Jeremy’s to keep. Inside the memorial Uncle John met up with Carol and asked her about the Council. Carol told John that he should talk to Damon because he was in charge of it now. John approached Damon and tried to convince Damon that he came back to town because they were on the same page; both wanted to keep Elena and her family safe. Damon wasn’t convinced.

Meanwhile Bonnie was pissed at Jonas. Did I miss something where Bonnie found out that Luka didn’t destroy the moonstone. In any case Bonnie knew that Jonas and Luka were working with Elijah and that she didn’t trust Elijah. Jonas said that they were working to keep Elena and the town safe from Klaus. Then Jeremy walked up asked if there was a problem, they both said no and Jeremy put his arm around Bonnie when they walked away. OK, when did this happen?

At the grill Matt bumped into Caroline and Caroline told him that she would drop by when he got off work so they could talk. On the way to her car Caroline was intercepted by Jules who asked where Tyler was. Care brushed her off but then when she turned around Brady sprayed her with vervain in a water pistol and then shot her for real in the forehead! Argh… Caroline, no! Back from the break and Care was in a metal cage, in pain. She pulled out the wood bullet from her forehead and then tried to undo the latch. But evil evil, I’m taking back my thought that he was hot before, Brady, was lounging outside the cage clearly enjoying Care Bear’s agony. Then he proceeded to shoot more vervain at her, shoot more wooden bullets into her, and then shoot a blow dart at her. Geez what next? A bow and arrow? A cannon ball? A samurai sword? Horrible man. Jules called Stefan’s phone using Caroline’s phone. She held the phone up to a screaming Care so Stefan would know they meant business. Jules told Stefan to bring Tyler to her in 20 minutes or else they would kill Caroline. Then he called Elena who was at the grill about what was going down. Damon overheard and headed over to the wolfy woods. Uncle John barred Elena from following. Elena told John that he may be her “father” but she would never be his daughter. Zing!

Stefan, Tyler and Damon showed up at the RV and demanded Caroline’s release. Jules, Brady and a bunch more werewolf goons surrounded them. Soon they were all tussling in the leaves. Damon managed to grab another guy’s heart, so far that’s three (witch Bree, Mason and that unnamed, uncredited dude). Tyler ran inside the RV and Caroline begged him to let her out. He did – even though the promo made it look like he was the one who locked her in there. Then they went outside but suddenly all the wolves sans Tyler were crippled in mind-bending agony. Jonas! showed up using his witchy hands to control the wolves. He told the vamps to leave and then told Tyler that when his friends woke up he needed to tell them to leave town.

At the Salvatore mansion, Uncle John brought a gift for Damon. He claimed it was the “how to kill an Original vampire kit” that he was taught by Isobel. Wow all that research at Duke paid off for her. So apparently the Originals can be killed with a metal dagger that’s dipped in the ashes of a white oak tree that dated back to when the Originals came to be. The be-ashed dagger has to be shoved into the Originals’ hearts and then it’s eternal sleep for them. Supposedly Isobel was also working on a plan to keep Klaus away from Mystic Falls. Do you still trust this guy?

Then at chez Gilbert Uncle John tried to be nice to Elena. He gave her a bracelet from her mom, Miranda Gilbert not Isobel, to wear. He knew how to tug on Elena’s heartstrings. But she was still suspicious of him. He left and Stefan showed up to give Elena a big old hug.

Stefan walked Caroline home. He asked if she was OK and she said she just wanted to take a shower. Upstairs when she was pulling out some of the blow dart pieces from her neck, Matt called. Care made up some excuse that Bonnie needed her. But Matt looked over to a table at the grill where Bonnie and Jeremy were yukking it up. So Matt asked Caroline if she was with BonBon now and Care said yes. Matt hung up upset. Then Tyler showed up to apologize but Care said that they could never be friends and slammed the door shut in his wolfman face. Finally Stefan returned with Elena and Bonnie so they could have a girls’ night slumber party. Fun!

Tyler went back to the wolf RV and informed Jules and Brady that Mason was looking for the moonstone. They were extremely excited about this but Tyler told them he didn’t know where it was now.

Uncle John paid a visit to Katherine in the tomb. Poor Kat she was still in that dammed lace party dress from the masquerade episode. Couldn’t somebody, Uncle John, anybody, give her some pajamas or jeans and t-shirts to wear? Anyway, John informed Kat that he was working with Isobel on how to get her out of the tomb… Aha! We knew he couldn’t be trusted.

Earlier Damon was introduced to the local reporter at the grill by Aunt Jenna. He seemed uninterested… until we saw them frolicking in Damon’s bathtub! Didn’t do as much justice as the shower though. Damon again had his existential crisis. He told the reporter that his dilemma was that he was in love with another man’s woman and she thought he was a good guy. But that it was against his nature to be good, to not kill, because he loved killing. Then he made out with her, eventually moving down to her neck and sucked on her blood.

Next episode: “Crying Wolf“ Stefan and Elena have a romantic getaway, Jenna suspects Alaric of lying, Tyler learns a little about the sun/moon curse, Damon tries to get Elijah to open up, Bonnie discovers new info about Luka and Tyler gives Matt relationship advice.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 pm on the CW TV Network.
