The technology of the last decade has forever changed the way that we live our lives. What were the best gadgets that we saw in the last ten years?
The iPod. The iPod revolutionized the way that we listen to music. Instead of having to carry around a clunky personal cd player along with all of our favorite cd’s, the Ipod allowed us to pack everything that we love to listen to into one small, pocket-sized device.
The Wii. Nintendo’s Wii system not only brought the company back as a major contender for people’s gaming dollars, it also got gamers off of the couch. The Wii, with its ability to allow players to act out games physically, led many weight loss experts and doctors to recommend the gaming system as another way to work out.
Netflix. While Netflix is more of a service than gadget, it has forever changed the way that people watch movies. The service that allows users to have movies delivered to their mailbox or streamed to their televisions has all but eliminated the need to leave the house to watch a movie. It has also been argued that Netflix is putting Blockbuster and its peers out of business.
High Definition Televisions. HD Technology provides a crisp, clear picture for viewers. Its sometimes difficult to tell how we ever got along without it. Try watching a show on an HD set, then watch the same program on a tube television. The difference is amazing.
Smart Phones. Before smart phones, people were relegated to using their cell phones for just talking, maybe texting as it got closer to the 2000’s. With the smart phones, people are able to access the internet, email, GPS tracking systems, and take pictures and movies. Suddenly, not having your phone meant that you were cut off from so much more than just important phone calls. Smart phones have become personal assistants for people who never thought that they needed one.
The Kindle. The Kindle is a device that allows users to download entire books to a small, hand-help device. Instead of having to lug around several books, the Kindle can hold everything that you want to read, and still fit comfortably in a book or briefcase. The Kindle has become a necessity for travelers and students alike. Some people even fear that the device will eliminate the need for paper books completely.
The iPad. The iPad was a long-awaited release from Mac that is essentially, a tablet form of a netbook. The iPad, however, goes far more places than any netbook can. Users are able to access the same application gallery that the iPhone offers, browse the web, use the fully functional Ipod that is stored inside, view digital media, and much more. The iPad is smaller than a laptop, but still has a screen large enough to make it user-friendly, and fits in any briefcase or backpack.
Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero is a video game that allows players to play the guitar along with some of their favorite bands. Along with its major competitor, Rock Band, Guitar Hero has gained a following with gamers and non-gamers alike. People have Guitar Hero parties, and the game has even replaced karaoke night in many local clubs.
Blue Tooth Technology. Blue Tooth technology has provided better capability for hands-free phone usage. Before Blue Tooth, people used earpieces that plugged into their phones and had a small microphone for people to talk into. These older hands-free sets were difficult to use, and often times required the user to hold the microphone to their mouth, making it little different than holding a phone itself. The Blue Tooth has a receiver that can pick up channel signals, eliminating the need for wires. Today, people can use this technology in many different ways, but its ability to allow people to talk and drive is its most important feature.
Flash Drives. Flash Drives are small storage devices that can hold documents, photos, videos, and music. They have eliminated the need to copy anything to a disc or cd. Flash drives are small, they can fit on a keychain. Their portability combined with the fact that they can store huge amounts of data has changed the way people do business. It has even become a necessity for students, allowing them to transport hard-copies of homework, even textbooks, back and fourth to class.
There are countless other gadgets that have influenced our daily lives, but these ten have had the most influence on work, home, and social lives around the world.
