I have had a large experience providing people knowledge they need to get employed. Most of them actually think that the resume is the most important factor and are fretting about every single little detail. They were actually asking me questions on what font and size to use, how many pages they should write and in what order (and endless questions about whether to include that or that), how should they say that they have no experience yet or if they tell too much than necessary and tens of etc…
I think you already understood that all this worrying about resume is way too exaggerated and most of the people completely missed the point with this. In case you really want to impress your employer then listen what I am about to tell you. Again, the most important thing is not your resume, actually, most of them just catch dust in the huge pile of same letters without even being red. This is caused by the great amount of people that want the same job and hiring manager would need five copies of himself just to read them all. In case you have hundreds of applications – how could you ever read all of them?
What you should focus on more is creating one of a hell impressive a cover letter. It should be really one of a kind and have some words that would draw attention right away. It is like a headline of a newspaper – imagine if a huge headline would be today’s date, why would anyone buy it? This is because headline is usually something like “Obama gets drunk and busts his car” – the same principle will attract attention from someone who will read your resume. Make sure it shows your personality and reflects of who you are because nobody wants to hire a resume writing professional (which letters are usually held in one huge stack – every one of them looks completely same) – you’re writing for a job, remember? You’ve gone about 15 seconds to stand out with your letter, which usually won’t even be opened if you won’t interest a guy to do this with its outside looks.
This is pretty much the only chance you could stand out from all the other guys. This is the reason why you will not be passed into the “rejects” stack of letters so it is a must to do everything that your cover a letter would be shining in front of all.
Note that the cover letter is a one-page letter and it should have plenty of white space. You can’t tell everything about your life just in one letter, its reason is only to the interest them in inviting you for an interview. If you can’t do this part right enough (writing the content inside your letter) get help to do this. What’s the point even if someone reads your letter but doesn’t invite you? Make sure you do everything to interest them in your services. Also be straight to the point, but not too cocky and stop fretting about every little freaking letter that is not the right size.
