John Morrison and The Miz have already developed one of the greatest rivalries of this generation in the span of the past few years, and have also developed great chemistry whenever they have a segment or a match together. Their rivalry will come to a head most likely at the 2011 Royal Rumble pay-per-view when John Morrison will challenge The Miz for the coveted WWE Championship.
Morrison and Miz were tag team partners for the better part of nearly two years while on the ECW brand. Their unlikely partnership began on November of 2007 and they won the WWE Tag Team Championships in their first official match as a team, defeating Matt Hardy and MVP for the belts. Morrison and Miz defended their titles numerous times against all comers, holding the titles for a total of 250 days before dropping it at The Great American Bash in 2008 to Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder.
The duo also had their own Internet show that was showcased on the WWE website titled The Dirt Sheet. On this show, both Morrison and Miz would mock wrestlers, usually the ones they were feuding with, both nobody was off limits. The weekly Internet show was so popular that it became the most watched show that WWE’s website ever produced. The show was discontinued after Morrison and Miz broke up as a tag team.
Morrison and The Miz accomplished more in two years as a tag team, than most veteran tag teams accomplish in their entire careers. They won two Tag Team Championships as a team and won two Slammy Awards in 2008, one for Tag Team of the Year and one for Best WWE.com Exclusive for their online show, The Dirt Sheet.
The partnership finally came to an end on the April 13rd episode of Monday Night Raw in 2009. This was the night of the 2009 WWE Draft, and The Miz was drafted to the Raw brand. Miz and Morrison embraced in the ring after the announcement, before Miz turned on Morrison, attacking him in the ring, and giving him his finisher. Morrison was drafted two days later in the WWE Supplemental Draft to the SmackDown brand.
After Morrison and Miz went their seperate ways, they each proclaimed that they were the Shawn Michaels of the group, and the other was the Marty Jannetty. Michaels and Jannety had good success when they were part of a tag team called “The Rockers” until Michaels turned on Jannetty ending their tag team forever. After they broke up, Michaels became The Heartbreak Kid, quickly turning into the top wrestler in the company, while Jannetty faded into obscurity. Michaels went on to win the world title on four different occasions and become one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, while Jannetty was fired after “The Rockers” came to an end.
Both Morrison and Miz saw immediate success as singles stars after their tag team partnership ended. The Miz won his first United States Championship six months after being on his own, and Morrison won the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown as well. At the Bragging Rights pay-per-view in 2009, because of the inter-promotional concept of the PPV, the two began feuding while holding their individual mid-card titles, even though they were on different brands. The Miz defeated his former tag team partner that night, but they would meet again at the next pay-per-view.
The next PPV was the 2009 Survivor Series and Morrison and Miz would each be team captains in a five-on-five Survivor Series match. Once again, Miz got the better of Morrison as Team Miz was victorious against Team Morrison. The Miz would pick up his third consecutive victory against Morrison at the Tribute to the Troops event weeks later, via roll up. The two had one last match for the time being at WrestleMania 26, a tag team match for the Unified Tag Team Championships. The team of ShoMiz (The Miz and Big Show) defended their titles successfully against John Morrison and R-Truth.
Once this mini-feud ended, they each went their seperate ways again. Miz has had the much better career in the past year, and has accomplished the most for any wrestler in 2010. Miz won the Unified Tag Team Championships with The Big Show, his second United States Championship, the Raw Money in the Bank Briefcase in July, and cashed in the briefcase successfully against Randy Orton in November, winning his first WWE Championship. Miz has accomplished all this in the calendar year. Morrison, on the other hand, has not won a single championship in 2010.
But things might be starting to change for Morrison. First, Morrison defeated three other wrestlers (Tyson Kidd, Cody Rhodes, Alberto Del Rio) to reach the finals of the 2010 King of the Ring tournament, before losing to Sheamus. Because of his strong showing in the tournament, morrison was given an opportunity to become the number one contender for the WWE Championship in a Ladder Match against the man he lost to in the finals of the King of the Ring tournament, Sheamus. Morrison made the most of this opportunity, winning the match and lifting himself into the main-event scene. The Miz retained his WWE Championship, defeating Randy Orton in a Tables Match at the same pay-per-view.
Now that Morrison is the number one contender for The Miz’s WWE Championship, their feud has been revived and reaching new heights.
It is yet to be seen who will turn out to be the better wrestler when both careers are over, but there are some things that are for sure. Both Morrison and Miz are great WWE Superstars and neither one is the Marty Jannetty of the team.
