Considered to be the largest underground lake in the United States, “The Lost Sea” has been a popular Tennessee tourist attraction for years.
As of recently, they have expanded their guided tour programming to include wild caving adventures for individuals.
What follows is a brief description of the facility’s new program and how one can go about making reservations.
Super Saturday Adventures
It use to be that in order to go on a wild caving adventure at “The Lost Sea” one needed to be part of a group of 12 or more people. This would have still been the case without the introduction of “Super Saturday Adventures.”
With “Super Saturday Adventures” individuals can join in on the wild caving fun. Each Saturday the facility staff conducts a three hour, guided, wild caving tour for individuals that begin promptly at 1:00 pm.
Just like the group wild caving adventures, participants should be prepared for physical exertion, getting dirty and having fun.
Would be participants are encouraged to bring along a working flashlight, bottled water, a light jacket, baby wipes for self-cleaning purposes and to be dressed appropriately.
The “Super Saturday Adventures” does not include an overnight stay or meals. In order to partake of those types of wild caving tours, one still needs to be part of a group.
Hours of Operation and Admission
As of 2010 “The Lost Sea” is open daily, year round except for Christmas. General admission is $16.95 per adult and $7.95 per child between the ages of 5 through 12. The general admission price is inclusive of a regular guided walking tour and a ride on a glass bottom boat. The general tour program lasts approximately 75 minutes.
The wild caving tours range from $24 per person for a daytime tour to $30 per person for an evening or “Super Saturday Adventure” tour. The wild caving tour price is inclusive of the both the wild tour and the general tour program mentioned above. Wild caving programs generally last 3 hours, unless one has requested additional services like lodging and meals.
Groups who would like to spend the night in the cave as well as enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant may do so with advance reservations, for an additional fee.
The $4.50 per person breakfast consists of eggs, sausage, biscuit, jelly and a beverage whereas the $6 per person dinner consists of choice of BBQ pork sandwich or deluxe hamburger, French fries and a beverage.
Advance reservations are required for the other wild caving tours but not the “Super Saturday Adventure.” Those interested in making group reservations for a wild caving tour should contact “The Lost Sea” staff directly at least two weeks in advance at 423-337-6616.
Would-be visitors should also be advised that all tour components, policies and prices are subject to change without advance notice and therefore should also be re-confirmed through “The Lost Sea Staff” prior to departure.
