Verizon’s 93 million service subscribers were happy to hear the rumors of the arrival of Apple’s iPhone to Verizon are true. The joining of these two companies will no doubt be a very profitable union. But the big debate for iPhone lovers is, to switch or not to switch? Here are some things to take into consideration before making the “big leap”.
There has been speculation for a while if Verizon was going to carry Apple’s iPhone. This rumor swept the net as far back as 2008. Now we know they are true as Verizon Wireless has announced February 10 as the release date for their iPhone.
The cost of the iPhone with Verizon will be the same as AT&T. They plan to offer a 16 GB version of the iPhone for $199.99 and a 32 GB iPhone for $299.99. Essentially there is no difference from Verizon to AT&T.
Verizon Wireless Plans vs. AT&T Plans
At this point we’re not sure if Verizon is planning on offering a special phone or data plan for the iPhone. However we do know that Verizon offers an unlimited data plan for their other smartphones, so there’s a good chance they’ll do the same for the iPhone. That’s something that could draw iPhone users over to Verizon as AT&T currently does not offer unlimited data plans. With AT&T you pay $25 a month for 2 GB of data. Pay only $5 more and you can get unlimited data with Verizon. You should no doubt be able to do that with your iPhone, but we’ll have to wait and see.
iPhone Capabilities With Verizon
Another major difference between the iPhone offered by Verizon and the iPhone from AT&T is the type of networks they run on. AT&T uses a GSM network. GSM is a global network so it would be easier for your iPhone to work internationally. Verizon uses a CDMA network which is mainly used only in the U.S. A benefit of having you iPhone with AT&T’s GSM network is that you can talk and receive data at the same time. That means you could talk and surf the web at the same time (great for you multi-taskers!). Sadly with Verizon’s CDMA network you cannot do both at the once.
Possible to Switch from AT&T to Verizon With the iPhone?
Because of the difference in networks between AT&T and Verizon, you cannot switch your AT&T iPhone to use it as a Verizon iPhone. If you are already in a contract with AT&T you could have to pay up to $325 to cancel. If you are stuck in a Verizon contract with another phone and want to change to the iPhone, you may be able to get the promotional pricing if you are eligible for an upgrade. If not, well you’ll have to pay the full price.
So, after considering it all- the iPhone with Verizon or the iPhone with AT&T? hmmmm…..
