The Hasselhoffs was canceled by A&E quicker than any show we have recently seen on television. A&E canceled The Hasselhoffs after airing just two episodes, basically ending the first season of the show after three days on television. That isn’t even enough time for viewers to realize the show was on the network, but apparently enough time for executives to know they weren’t going to stick with their new reality show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the new reality show called The Hasselhoffs debuted on Monday, Dec. 6, with its first two episodes. Some new shows are getting rolled out in this fashion in order to really draw in an audience and keep them interested for at least a brief segment of time during a debut night. Well, The Hasselhoffs did not debut well, and it could be the ratings from those first two episodes that turn out to be the culprit behind the cancellation.
The series premiere had an estimated 718,000 viewers, with just 505,000 estimated viewers tuning in to the second episode. There used to be a day when that was a high number for a cable reality show to debut with, but that appears to no longer be the case. Maybe A&E felt the show was more expensive to produce and air than what this viewership level was going to earn them in commercial fees, but whatever the case, The Hasselhoffs has now been pulled.
Maybe a big reason that it is so surprising A&E made this decision is how much promotion went into the show. Movie theaters around the country were airing advertisements for the show in front of their previews, and if you watched the network for other shows, you had to have seen plenty of commercials for The Hasselhoffs. A problem with using theaters for advertisements is that if you don’t include a specific date for the premiere, people tend to forget that the show is going to be on.
The Hasselhoffs was supposed to be the latest reality show that depicted a family as it went through its day-to-day lives, and in this case covered David Hasselhoff and his two daughters. They had to be hoping that it was going to find similar success to that of shows with the Kardashians or the Osbournes over the years, but Nielsen states that not as many viewers were interested in watching another family-based reality show. Or maybe they just weren’t that interested in learning more about David Hasselhoff.
This show had always been rumored as a reason that Hasselhoff quit America’s Got Talent, so hopefully he has a backup plan going forward. It is unclear if A&E plans to air any of the other episodes of The Hasselhoffs that have already been aired, or if they will just stay in the can.
