The scene we are about to witness is David and his Mother Ava having a discussion about going to church. This scene can be happening anywhere in the country right now with the economy out of sorts and unemployment rising David who has just received his BA in Liberal Arts is finding it hard to land a job.
Davids mother Ava is a Christian who is trying to get her Son into the word but he is finding it hard to believe because he and his mother are having such a hard time making ends meet. Ava is working but her paycheck does not bring in enough money to pay the bills. The savings account has been spent and she has not much left in her checking account. They like many other Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. And is one step away from eviction.
“Mom I don’t want to go to church today, I need to stay home and get on the computer and apply for some more jobs”.
“Son we need to go to church and pray only the Lord will be able to get us out of this”.
“Mom you go to church every Sunday you pray everyday several times a day and here we are almost out on the streets, I hate seeing you work so hard and I am not contributing, not helping us get out of this finantial bind we are in, I’m staying home and going to apply for all the jobs that I can, I am also going to send my manuscript to some more publishers, something will happen soon things will look up for us when I find a job, bring some income into this house”.
“Well okay son this Sunday I will let you stay home and do your thing on the computer but next Sunday you will go to church with me and since you are staying home fix dinner, I’ll see you when I get back”.
“Okay Mom see you when you get back, now let me first check my emails. Here is a funny one it says If you need the help of an agent to take your career to the next level reply to this email. Hmmmm I think I will reply.”
One second later there is a knock on the front door, David answers it.
“Who are you?”
“Did you not ask for my help the help of an agent?”
I just replied to that email a second ago it is not humanly possible for anyone to have gotten here this soon.”
“Well if you invite me in we can talk about that.”
” Before I do that what is you name?”
“My name is Nicholas.”
“And your last name would be?”
“Lets just leave it as Nicholas, now may I come in?”
“Yeah come on in. Now Nicholas how can you help me?”
“How would you like me to help you?”
“Well you said in the email you can take careers to the next level, that is what I would like you to do for me.”
“Well David I can certainly do that but you know nothing in this life is free, I would need you to give me something in return and you would have riches you never thought possible.”
“And what would you want in return my soul?”
“You said that I did not.”
“I must be dreaming this can’t be happening my mother and in church they talk of the devil but this can not be happening.”
” I did not say I am a devil I am an agent.”
An agent of what the devil, do you want my soul?”
“I am an agent but if I were a devil I would not need your soul, you go to church you know what is in that book, you have to believe in his son and follow him and if you don’t the devil gets your soul. There are a multitude of unbelievers out there the devil has more souls than he can handle why would he need yours?”
“You know me and my mother we are going through a lot right now but I don’t think we need your help.”
Nicolas walks over to a bookshelf where there is a picture of Davids mother.
“Is this your mother?”
“Very beautiful woman a sort of nobility about her, how do you think she would fare in one of those homeless shelters have you ever been to one of those?”
“No but who says we’ll wind up in a shelter?”
“David I did my research you and your mother are just a step away from the streets.”
“I still do not want your help my mother and I will make it God will help us.”
“Has he helped you so far, you pray and pray and no help has come to you I can help you now.”
“I don’t want your help my mother and I will make it.”
“David go visit one of those shelters then see if you won’t except my help. I’ll do this for you I will give you 48 hours to make up your mind if you don’t make up your mind in the 48 hours you lose the deal.”
“The deal being my soul?”
“I did not say that you did, you have 48 hours.”
And with that Nicholas vanishes into thin air.
Hours later David and his mother are sitting at the dinner table.
“Mom I’m doing a little research for another book I’m working on do you know where there are any homeless shelters?”
“Yes son there is one on New street.”
“I think I will go after dinner to take a look at it.”
A hour or so after David visits the shelter.
“That place is horrible I, my mom could not stay there I could not let her go through that I will go to bed and sleep on it he said I have 48 hours.”
The next morning Davids Mom has gone to work David is still thinking about what to do. Lunch time comes around and Ava, Davids mom comes home.
“Mom what are you doing home so early?”
“Oh son they cut back my hours instead of working 5 days a week they cut me down to 3 days a week we were having trouble making it before, I don’t know how we’ll make it now?”
David goes into his room and looks at the email he got a day earlier from Nicholas.
“I guess there is no other way out I have to ask for his help, may God forgive me…..”
