Just in time for people who want to lose weight in 2011, Season 11 of “The Biggest Loser” welcomes 22 new contestants, including Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner, ready to inspire viewers to get up and move. If you were surprised at how much contestants in past seasons weighed, this season features a contestant who once weighed more than 600 pounds. Season 11 of “The Biggest Loser” also welcomes two new trainers.
The contestants had compelling stories. Courtney was told by her doctor that she couldn’t be on the show. So, on her own, she lost more than 100 pounds and weighed in at 323. She worked at a Dairy Queen while her mother Marci, who weighed 238, owned a gym. Courtney’s effort at losing weight on her own makes her a contestant to look out for as the season progresses.
The father-son team of Arthur & Jesse was the heaviest, weighing a combined total of 800 pounds. Arthur, 34 years old, was the heaviest contestant, 507 pounds. Though past contestant Michael weighed 526 pounds, he was more than six feet tall. Arthur is only 5’8″ and his body is 80 percent fat. He once weighed more than 600 pounds.
Olivia, an opera singer, hopes her weight loss will help her get roles other than nurses, elderly women and witches.
The contestants competed in their first challenge right after the weigh in. The contestants would compete to train with Bob & Jillian or in a secret location with the new trainers. Whoever decided to train with the new trainers earned immunity for four weeks. Each team ran a 5K on a treadmill and the first four teams to finish the challenge got to pick their trainers.
Rulon & Justin finished the challenge first, giving them the chance to pick their trainer. They chose immunity with the unknown trainers. Moses & Kaylee, Austin & Ken, Sarah & Denise and Larailmy & Q picked the new trainers. The remaining six teams went to Bob & Jillian.
Bob & Jillian gave the first workout. I was surprised as how hard some of them worked, even though most of them never exercised before. Of course, a lot of them puked and groaned, and Jillian screamed. The contestants even had to push a pick-up truck.
“The Biggest Loser” didn’t reveal the new trainers, but their method seemed to get results. Though most of the end of the week weights were kept as secret as their training location, we learned that Justin and Rulon lost 27 and 32 pounds respectively. Moses lost 41 pounds, the most lost by any player in a single week.
Irene & Ana had the lowest percentage of weight loss. Ana wanted to go home and let her daughter stay on the ranch. The contestants honored her wishes and sent her home the first week. At the time of the taping, she weighed 205 pounds.
This season hasn’t started with much drama, but it’s only week one.
