I’ve lived in Wilmington, DE for almost six years now, and when the wife and I have a hankering to go to a diner, our first choice is to go to a little place on the corner of Route 202 (Concord Pike) & Silverside Road called Lucky’s Coffee Shop (http://luckyscoffeeshop.com/). Lucky’s has only been around for a couple of years now (Sept 2007), but it has fast become our go to restaurant when we’re looking for good food at a reasonable price, and the service is done with a smile. What makes Lucky’s standout for me and my family, is it’s got a fun atmosphere, as look no further then the menus which are peppered with subtle little jokes that can’t help but bring a smile to your face (For example “all of our pancakes, waffles and French toast are free range and treated in the most humane manner possible.” Taken directly from the menu).
Before I go on, I would like it known that I have absolutely no affiliation with the restaurant myself in any way (no relatives who work there, don’t know the owners, nothin’), I mean if they want to throw me a free meal or two for writing nice things about them, who am I to argue, but this was done as an opinion piece. In fact, I’m almost hesitant to write such nice things about them in the off chance a lot of people read this article, and make it more difficult to get a table there. This is the kind of place that you may try for the first time, but this won’t be the last time you’ll walk through their doors, as the wife and I have tried a lot of different restaurants in the area, but once we found Lucky’s, we haven’t been to nearly as many places as before.
As for the food, the menu can be somewhat of a problem, but I like to think about it as a good problem. You know how sometimes you go to a restaurant and can’t make up your mind because the menu is jam packed with too much stuff? Lucky’s clearly suffers from this dilemma. Lucky’s serves breakfast all day, and I’m a sucker for some breakfast, as I’m impartial to their ” Fancy Schmansy Pancakes” as per the menu (I like Brinner what can I say). I’ve tried a bunch of other things there as well, and the sandwiches are just as good as their breakfast choices, and the meatloaf is just like my mom use to make (let it be known my mom made a pretty solid loaf growing up, and I would consistently look forward to loaf day). So when it comes to choices, Lucky’s doesn’t have just one, it frequently has too many, but again, is that really a bad thing?
We have a 21 month old daughter, and Lucky’s is a very kid friendly place. Besides having some good options on the menu, the wait staff will not be shy about coming over to your table and saying hi to your little ones. The last time we went, everyone was warm and friendly, and even though our daughter left a nice size mess under her high chair (they were very accommodating on the seating too), I didn’t see any complaints from the busboys. Some places, you get that look that says, hey buddy, can’t you control your kid, as why do I have to clean up her mess? At Lucky’s I got the look that says, thanks for bringing your daughter here, we appreciate your business, and if she makes a mess, we’ll clean it up and not make you feel bad about it, after all she’s under two years old, and can’t really help herself, WE UNDERSTAND! As a parent, this is one of the things we look for when we go out, as some places claim to be kid friendly, other places actually are kid friendly, and I think that’s the best way to describe Lucky’s.
Lucky’s has other things going for it too such as a big flat screen TV on the wall, a good counter for extra customers to sit at if the tables are all taken, well maintained restrooms (at least when I have been there), and cool looking chairs to sit on when you first get inside. Lucky’s is really just a fun place to go to, as the ambience they have is very inviting and gives you that come on in and stay a while feel to it. Lucky’s is really just a nice little place in Wilmington, and if you are ever looking for a diner that will treat you like family the first time you go in, Lucky’s might be the start of a beautiful relationship between you and your new favorite diner, as it was for me.
