You might be familiar with the saying, “Keep Portland Weird”. I for one, like that the city of Portland has not only many unique qualities, but an abundance of excellent restaurant choices. If your looking for a drive-in restaurant with a fun atmosphere and delicious food, here are 3 of Portland’s best.
Portland, Oregon Drive-In Restaurant #1
Jim Dandy Drive-In restaurant has been around since 1937. It is even part of a Smithsonian exhibit in Washington, D.C., called “America on the Move”. You’ll be transported back in time through all of the historic pictures and newspaper clippings from Portland’s past.
Jim Dandy is the place to take a break from your diet and enjoy some wonderful comfort food. The shakes are thick and creamy, hand mixed, and you can choose from 70 different flavor combinations. The cheeseburgers are thick and juicy, and still some of the best in town. Fish and chips are on the menu as well, and made from fresh halibut. Yum. If you go for breakfast, try the biscuits and gravy or corned beef hash with onions. You might want to go home and take a nap afterwards, but it is well worth it.
Jim Dandy opens Monday through Friday at 6:30am, 7:00am on Saturday and is closed on Sunday. They are located at 9626 Sandy Boulevard in Portland, across the street from the MAX light rail. For details, visit their website at jimdandydrivein.com/601.html
Portland, Oregon Drive-In Restaurant #2
Humdinger Drive-In is another excellent choice if your looking for a drive-in restaurant in Portland. If your hungry, Humdinger offers some of the largest portions I’ve seen. The bacon-cheeseburger is piled high with delicious, if a bit greasy, bacon strips. Onion rings and french fries are so good they might be considered addictive. It isn’t the cheapest place, but well worth it for what you get. Just be sure to come with a large appetite, and cash.
At Humdinger, cash is the only form of payment accepted so be sure to be prepared. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am-9pm, and they are located in southwest Portland at 8250 SW Barbur Boulevard, Portland, OR 97129. Call 503-246-8132 for more information.
Portland, Oregon Drive-In Restaurant #3
A little hard to find, Bonnie’s Drive-In may be one of Portland’s best hidden secrets. From the outside it may be hard to tell, but they offer some of the best food and friendliest service at an extremely cheap price. Huge, juice cheeseburgers are to die for, have one with their tator tots and you might think your in heaven. Bonnie’s even offers delicious homemade eggrolls and a very good chicken teriyaki bowl.
Bonnie’s is located at 1111 NW 21st Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97209. Call 503-224-8438 for hours and more information as hours can be limited and change frequently.
When in Portland, you’ll never have a problem finding the food you crave! Enjoy.
