The Armenian Gampr is a large and hearty dog breed that has been guarded and moving livestock in the farmlands of Armenia and Turkey. These dogs have a lot of history, as they have been around the Armenian mountains for over two thousand years, with their primitive larger relatives living in the prehistoric era. Even the Gamprs today look very similar to what they have in the ancient times.
Appearance
These large animals are capable of herding livestock with their big and tough bodies. Their heads are large and semi round with a big muzzle and black nose. Their face has a serious manner to it even when they are horsing around. They can weigh up to one hundred pounds of sheer muscle mass and their height is about forty to fifty inches. Gampr tails are long and curl at the end, with their coats being an off white, black, sometimes tan and white spotted, although the most common color is a beige white.
Temperament
A tranquil dog, they bring peace to the home despite their large and intimidating appearance. This dog seems to always have a human’s back. If they feel a person is in danger, they will do whatever they can to guard and protect as well as being able to comfort someone who they think is in deep sadness. Proving their intelligence, they are wonderful best friends for any person and an excellent sheep herding for shepherds.
Grooming
Their thick and long coat is coarse to the touch and needs a good groom every week. They shed the most during the summer months so this is a precaution that comes with the Gampr. Bathing them can be tough, so washing them outside gently with a hose is one of the best bets when it comes to this gentle giant.
Health
Gamprs do not have a lot of health problems relating to them. Their strapping selves can become immune to certain types of colds if they already have had one in the past. They lie up to twelve to even fifteen years depending on their genetic health as well as how good their master can prepare for them. Gamprs may get bone issues later in life and resorting to some arthritis medication would do them very well and stop any prolonged pain.
The Armenian Gampr is a dog breed that shines through its beauty and its duty to guard wounded or in danger humans. The Gampr is an ancient breed that has been so in tune with human civilization, they have become some of the closest of canine buddies.
