The miniseries in which Katie Holmes plays Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis has been dropped by the History Channel amid rumors that the Kennedy family pressured its cancellation. A&E canceled the release of the miniseries and the official report states simply that the series did not fit into the plans of the channel. Though this is a realistic enough explanation, the rumor mill has been buzzing and it is reported that the Kennedy family themselves pushed for the cancellation of the show.
Another official statement reported that the finished product, though acted to a high quality was not historical enough and rather more of a dramatic interpretation of the facts. The series will still air in Canada but the History channel in the U.S. thinks that the series is rather historical fiction than an honest relaying of facts. Some say that the script was vindictive and inaccurate.
The series has drawn much attention in the past few months as the star studded cast was sure to be spectacular and the director had been responsible for such hits as ’24’ but as far as the history channel is concerned, star power and director chops is not enough to save the series. The production crew is currently in talks to sell the rights to the series to a pay cable channel. With stars like Katie Holmes as Jackie O and Greg Kinnear as the man himself JFK this series is sure to be entertaining.
The production was one of the most expensive in recent years and as such stands to lose millions if the series is not picked up by some channel. Though it is unclear where the series will end up, spectators are certain that the star power and the press that has been surrounding it since its cancellation will help to boost ratings and draw in viewers. All this may be true but at what cost? The release of the series had been anticipated for the History channel and several promotions have already been made for the series.
No matter where the series ends up there will be people to watch it. The ruckus that has surrounded it over the past few weeks since its cancellation will only serve to draw in viewers and make them wonder why it was cancelled. As with any big series, controversy only makes the public more curious and any good that the Kennedy family or any other group may have done in suppressing the series will shortly be undone when viewers are able to see the finished product.
